El Al Non-Mehadrin Kosher Meals
« on: October 09, 2018, 08:45:45 AM »
LY Premium Economy, TLV-EWR
Excellent IMO. Choice of salmon, chicken or beef for main meal, and omelette or blintz for breakfast. I chose salmon and blintz

LY Premium Economy EWR-TLV
Also excellent. Choice of chicken, salmon or veggie for dinner, and omelette or museli/fruit for breakfast. I chose salmon and museli. They brought around plate of fruit after dinner, not pictured. No menus (but I think there are supposed to be)

BTW - good choice of kosher food at Art and Lounge in EWR. They had sealed packages of;

Veggie wraps with salads
Salmon with salads
Various pastries, cookies and desserts
Fruit salad
Bagel/Pita
Hummous/Babaganoush
Etc

Is this the "strictly kosher" meal?

Curious if anyone has flown El Al in J and ordered one of the vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian meals instead of the regular meals. When I fly I prefer not to have a heavy meat meal, but don't want to be left eating some stinky fish or boring pile of leaves. All the reviews I seem to be finding are of the regular offerings.

Anyone with any experience? TIA.

I only flew J once and the entrée was a choice of meat, chicken, or fish so meal choice might be less relaxant.

In Premium (which is very similar to J in terms of food) TLV-EWR had a choice of fish (salmon + tortellini), chicken or beef. Person next to me had a pre-ordered vegetarian meal which looked like mostly vegetables, and starter was not as interesting. They also received a different breakfast meal, with no choice of main. EWR-TLV had a choice of fish (salmon + rice), veggie (couscous + veggies) or chicken.

Assume c is similar.

See pictures above of both salmon meals, which were very tasty.

NOTE THAT THIS REFERS TO STANDARD KOSHER MEALS ON LY, NOT SPECIAL/GLATT KOSHER

No disrespect but your meals on LY were not Glatt (or strictly kosher, whatever they are calling them these days) and most people here would not eat that so I would refrain from using them as examples.

But the question was regarding vegetarian meals compared to regular meals. He did not mention strictly/glatt kosher vegetarian etc. So with respect i think the answer was a valid response to question asked.
And I believe that many on this board would eat regular kosher meals on LY (possibly not red meat). I know plenty of rabbanim from Israel and UK who will.

I did not mean for this to turn into a halachic discussion. I respect your opinion and I'm sure you have a reason for eating them. I never criticized you for eating it either. I'm just pointing out that most here would not eat it so it is misleading to them when you post about it without clarifying

Understood and accepted. But I was responding to a question 'Curious if anyone has flown El Al in J and ordered one of the vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian meals instead of the regular meals'. I understood this as referring to regular meals, not glatt/strictly kosher. Maybe I misunderstood...
If you order KSML on El Al, you will receive the 'standard kosher' meal.

I have updated my post to clarify anyway.

I appreciate the distinction and to be clear, I was referring to the "standard" kosher options on LY, not the "glatt" or "strictly" kosher ones. I know what I'm getting there and that is well documented in these forums. What's less clear are the non-"strict" options, so was searching info on those, particularly the non-meat options.

Thanks to all for responding.

OU Statement:

The El-Al meals from New York are certified in the commissary only, but due to the way they are served, it is recommended to order a Regal Meal. The Orthodox Union does not certify the planes.
This applies both to El-Al and Privilege Style operated planes.
