Best Cashback card for general purchases?
« on: October 29, 2018, 08:57:47 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for the best cash back card available for just general everyday purchases (coffee, toilettries, take out or just whatever is minor that doesn't require benefits)

I know AMEX has a 1.5% Cash magnet and chase I believe is the same?

i'm not really interested in a 3/2/1 structure.

I was thinking about getting a Citi Double Cash Card which was 2% which was the highest I could find.

Or is there another benefit to that card?

They are 3 cents per dollar and then go down to 2.5 cents after year one (that's cents not points)

Great care if you can get approved

Alliant

But you have to spend ~$12,000 on the Alliant Sig @ 2.5% before you come out ahead vs a straight 2% card.

When I read coffee, toiletries and take out I don't see $12K being realistic.

~$12,000
And that's excluding spending in more lucrative bonus categories on other cards.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

How is 2% better than 2.5-3%? Is this some type of new math they are teaching?  :)

For first year the discover it  card will match your points which comes out to 3% on all purchases besides the bonus categories but no sign up bonus.

$11K x 2% = $220

($11K x 2.5%) - $59 = $216

No fee the first year and 3%.

They make sense though.

3% for the first year, yeah.

But i'd only be making an extra .5% more in year 2 and so fourth plus i'd have to pay $59 annually.

I don't think I'd rack up enough cash back to come out positive where I'd pay off the $59 then make more on top of that.

If anything, I might break even.

3% on everything the first year then 2.5% after that. Has $59 AF waived the first year.

How much do you spend on non-bonused purchases per year?

Some like to play the match the purchase to the card game. Also credit union cards are hidden gems.
