There just trying to do you a favor they dont gain anything now from it just some people who laugh at them. They just want you to have some afterlife.
It's still demeaning to the person and makes them feel bad, having good intentions doesn't excuse bad behavior.

I give benefit of doubt and overall appreciate the outreach work, but I would also prefer not to be asked to put on tefillin while wearing a yarmulka, if possible :)

Only time I've been asked was when I was wearing black and white. Maybe it was because my tzitzis where tucked in?
I'm not who you think I am.

Can I just say, as a Modern Orthodox Jew I personally get frustrated by being asked to put tefillin on- often while I'm wearing a Kippah?
I wonder why that is, I've been offered tefillin as well as daled minim, wasn't offended at all. Maybe I just assumed they weren't the shluchim.

Guys, you were being asked to put on Rabeinu Tam...

  • No Yalmuka, ask to put on teffilin.

  • Yalmuka no breard, ask to put on rabeinu tam.

  • Beard plus long payus, ask to learn a chapter tanya.

This is the basics of mivtzoim.

Oh, that's how it works? I see. So next time I see some guys hanging around with tefillin I'll ask them if they want to learn a perek of Shulchan Aruch with me.

What did you say or do?
The doctor told us how moved and heartbroken he is about the Pittsburgh shooting since he knew some of the people part of that temple. He was telling us about the Red Sox how they put a symbol of the star of David  how meaningful this was to him since he's a Red Sox fan. We asked him if he would do something personal as a merit for the victims of the shooting and also as a merit for our father's recovery. He said of course,  And then my father asked him when was the last time he put on Tefillin?  which he answered; the first and last time was at his bar Mitzvah. He is now 74 years old, so do the math . My father asked him would you want to don my tefillin today,  He was quiet for a moment and then said , yes of course ! He asked us to help him out, said Shema, ( shed 2 tears) It was a very moving scene to see an elderly doctor  married to a non Jew put on tefillin for the first time in so many years in our home. We do feel it as a huge Zcus for our  dear father. He even asked us if he can say kaddish :) we then sang together Ani Mammin.

I, and as i understand, many lubavitchers as well, have had my tefillin used by people wearing yarmulkas countless times, dales minim even more. Many many people rely on it when they are late for work etc.
I guess it's worth those few that get frustrated ,for the many that benefit

On a related topic....is it wrong for a from employer to ask an employee not to ask people to put on tefillin while he's at work? Example: mashgiach at a hotel/temple/any venue. Would if the client doesn't want?

So when they guy asked me to shake a lulav, was it because it was a yaneveh? Not sure what else he was thinking..

Guide to not getting accosted by Lubavitchers:

- Make sure your tzitzis are not tucked in.
- Wear your black hat, but first sit on it and roll it through a bunch of dips and salads first.
- If it's Shabbos, wear a towel around your neck (around the waist will not help).
- If the Lubavitcher does not have a yellow flag, yechi yarmulke or any such parephernalia, put on a yechi yarmulke and unfurl your flag.
- If the Lubavitcher does have those items, you're out of luck.
- On Sukkos, carry around a sleeping bag and pillow and ask if they have slept in the sukkah yet.
- Do not put on a t-shirt that says, "I already put on tefillin" (or bentched lulav, etc.). It won't help.
