Arosa: Metropol Hotel - quaint little old hotel. Not very fancy - it's like honeymooning in your grandmother's house (HT: Mrs. Moishebatchy). The food is very basic, but delicious. Mikva on premises. HalbTax Pass

A HalbTax pass (or Half Fare card) is a card designated for tourists and not for Swiss residents (officially...). The card gives you half price on all public transportation like buses, trains, trams, boats and also on "most" cable cars (attractions). There are basically 4 kinds.

1) An annual pass, the price is currently 175 francs. If i remember correctly it has a photo ID of the recipient, so double check before sharing it.
Click here for the annual pass

2) A 30 day pass, the price is currently 120 francs, it does not have a photo ID on it.
Click here or here for the 30 day pass

3) - Recommended for frequent traveling Swiss Travel Pass - you prepay a set amount per day and get unlimited for that day (plus "optional" for a fee, for 1 month including the days you chose, it is a HalbTax, even on the prepaid free days, it's only free for all transportation, on cable cars you only get half off). The price per day depends on how many days you prepay, for example if you prepay 8 days, the price per day will be about 53 francs, if you prepay 3 days the price per day will be about 73 francs. If you are 25 y/o or younger, you can get the Youth Pass which is cheaper - If you prepay 8 days  the price per day will be about 40 francs a day, if you prepay 3 days the price per day will be about 62 francs.
Click here (or here) for the prepaid pass

The card comes with a few days “you could chose your dates later”, officially when you want to use a certain day for the free day you should fill in on the pass that date, and when the first conductor comes he punches that day, but technically you can leave the date blank until the conductor comes, that way you have a chance if no conductor asks you for your card (happens quite often) you can save it for the next day :)

4) Swiss Transfer Ticket" This card costs 141 francs and is valid for 2 trips from and to the boarder or airport, for example you are traveling from the airport to Arosa and are not planning to go anywhere else or take any other transportation, with this card you will effectively pay 71 francs per way. This card is only valid for trips to and from the airport or boarder and no (long) stops allowed. Technically if you will travel one more day, the Swiss travel pass mentioned above will probably be cheaper.

Make sure to order your pass a few weeks before leaving, it takes about 1-3 weeks for the pass to arrive. But you can always buy it in the Airport, though you might have to wait in line and also if you want to buy the Youth pass (for 25 y/o or younger) they might ask you for proof...

There is also a family pass if you travel with a large family, I am not familiar with that.

Fast Baggage
There is a service via SBB, They deliver your luggage for you!! For example you are traveling from ZRH to Arosa, you don't want to be busy Shlepping around your luggage, You can check in your luggage in the airport and they (SBB) will deliver it to the train station in Arosa. This service is available "from and to" most train stations in Switzerland. You can ask about the Fast Baggage by any train station or read here or here

You can even buy a tag that you put on the luggage before checking in your luggage in any airport (i.e. JFK) and Rail Europe will take your luggage from the airplane in Switzerland and deliver it either to your hotel or to the train station in the city you're going to.  Read about Flight Luggage Here

PS. When doing research and getting to a website in German, just add /en (after .ch) to translate to English.
And Hey, Don't forget to write a TR ;)

Sample Itinerary for 9 hour stopover on Swiss flight from TLV to U.S. that lands at 810 and takes off around 5
Copied from @cholent:
Here it is: landed in zrh, crazy line for entering country but moved pretty quickly, about half an hour. Picked up sim in the airport. Rented car through Priceline from europecar. Drove to Titlis, stunning scenery along drive. Missed a turnoff because I couldn't get Waze to talk and I was trying to do some stuff online while we were driving, added half an hour to get there, but the stunning scenery made it worthwhile. Got there, parked, you pay at the entrance if you're going to park for more than an hour. Paid, took the cable car. Got off at there halfway station by mistake, gorgeous lake. Went back on and back up to the top. It was somewhat cloudy which was a pity. Suspension bridge was fun but no view because of the clouds. Took the ice flyer to the other peak, then went sledding down the hill, lots of fun. No tubing because there wasn't enough snow. We didn't have enough time for the ice cave because of the extra time driving there and we weren't sure where it was anyway. Made some new Israeli friends and took the cable car down with them. Got back to the airport, returning the car took less than five minutes, getting through the airport took a little longer so we didn't have time for showers at the lounge. It was amazing all around, I would definitely recommend

Is it worth getting the unlimited pass? I'm not a pro at skiing but looks like I'm missing out on some other stuff

Chaim, look at the links on my previous post? What's the price difference between the different passes? What are
the extra perks of the unlimited pass? Look at the description Benefits of using Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass, etc. and
decide for yourself.

Does anyone have any recommendations where to stay and what to do.

I am landing in ZRH this coming Monday morning and leaving late Wednesday evening.  Just my wife and myself.

Thanks

Have you ever been to or heard of the W verbier?

Yes, Verbier is very well known. They haven't had snowfall there for almost 3 weeks, and for late April,
I would highly suggest you wait till last minute till you book your hotel accommodations.

Even if there is no snowfall, the resorts are able to generate powdered snow. The issue is that in April,
the conditions usually deteriorate, as it's too warm, and the snow turns to slush. I am just recommending
to wait till right before your arrival date, so you can research the conditions, so you choose the right place,
and have an enjoyable holiday. Also, maybe it's worth considering Val d'Isère, and Chamonix in France, as they are
much higher altitude, so better chances of having good snow.

Ah definitely makes sense.
I'm kinda tied to Switzerland, or somewhere within 3 hours . I would really like to use points for the hotel and seems for now that all the other ones in Switzerland are full with no availability. Any other ideas?

Any particular reason you are tied to Switzerland? From Geneva airport, the ski resorts in France are much closer, and transportation, accommodations, and ski lift passes will cost a fraction of the price. Also, each resort in Switzerland has many dozens of self-catering chalets,
it would be significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel.

Then again, the reason availability is scarce is that Switzerland has school holidays
http://www.edk.ch/dyn/15213.php . School children have around 13 weeks of holiday per school year. The dates are set by the cantons and communes. They vary from region to region, but for the most part this year Frühling/Spring break is 8th till the 23rd of April or 15th to the 30th of April.

I'm planning in staying in Zurich for shabbos by relatives. And probably will fly from zrh to tlv. As of now I have spg points (or hilton) and would rather not lay out of pocket if possible. Also I know we're going to ski resorts but my wide doesn't ski so I'd like to have a full variety of activities snow related and other wise.

Hey all!

Gonna be stopping in ZRH for 14 hours en route TLV->SIN in a few weeks, and I'm trying to put together an itinerary for the layover. We're landing 8:40A, departing 10:45P, both in J on LX.

Just read through all 97 (!) pages of this thread, using that as a base point for my research...

Putting all that together, my thought is to land, rent a car, drive to Lucerne, take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne, drive to Engelsberg, cable car and rotair up to the Titlis summit, do the Cliff Walk, Glacier Cave and Ice Flyer, take Rotair down to Trustee, snow tubing at the park, cable car back down to Engelsberg, drive back to ZRH, dinner at Olive Garden, back to the airport and hopefully a shower and some tasting at the whiskey bar in the LX Senator lounge before the flight.

My questions are these:
- Is this schedule ambitious or impossible? Are we packing too much in? (We're two adults in our late 20's)
- Would we be better off skipping Titlis and doing Pilatus instead? I see the cog railway is closed this time of year, and it seems like these more to do on Titlis as well, so that seemed like a more worthwhile destination. How do the views compare between those two in the winter?
- Alternatively, if we are doing Titlis, does it make sense to skip Lucerne and Lake Lucerne and just go straight to/from Engelsberg? How badly should we want to Lake Lucerne?
- I know that Lake Lucerne can be down as part of the Gold/Silver Roundtrip, is there a recommended way to just do a scenic boat ride that returns to the drop off point?
- Based on how much we're packing in, a car seems like a good idea. Am I crazy? Cost wise it seems like it'll price out similarly for the two of us (found a car for about 75CHF). Is any of it difficult driving? Any ideas of what the tolls would be for this?
- The r/t tickets for Titlis are 92 CHF. There is a 50% discount for holders of a General Pass or Halb Tax. Is there any way for me to get ahold of one for one day? I only see a minimum of 3 days online, and the cost negates the discount. Is it possible to have someone with a pass purchase tickets for me? Or is there another discount option?

I hope the long post doesn't scare anyone off. I tried to avoid questions which were already answered.

TIA

Your schedule is ambitious and doable. I would prefer Titlis, much much more to do and see there, and it's over 1,100 meters higher than Pilatus. Lucerne is on the way, and it's definitely worth stopping there and at least taking a stroll around the lake. Just I would skip Pilatus.
Just walking around the lake is extremely scenic. As far as the boat rides, look at http://www.lakelucerne.ch/en/timetable-fares/timetable/

Any car rented in Switzerland has a vignette, so tolls are not an issue. http://www.myswissalps.com/motorwayvignette
Driving is easy, and not difficult. Just pay extreme attention to the speed limits, as there are speed cameras everywhere, and fines can
be extremely expensive. And running a yellow/amber light is also penalized. Unfortunately, Halb Tax (CHF 185 for a year) doesn't make sense to purchase, unless you will be staying for longer. Not aware of any other discounts for foreigners. If your purchase a ticket with a halbtax
discount, then the ticket inspectors will ask to see your halbtax card, that would have your photo on it.

I emailed the W and this is what they responded to with activities:
-   Snowshoeing and ski touring
-   Paragliding from les Ruinettes with landing at Le Chable
-   Skydiving from a helicopter over Verbier, departure from le Chable
-   Sledging on the 10km pist of Savoleyres/La Tzoumaz, no booking needed-subjected to snow condition
-   Ice skating at the Sport center
-   Verbier Cheese factory visit
-   Vineyard visit (in the valley, not n Verbier)
-   Caviar farm visit (in the valley)

What would zermatt or St moritz offer more or different?

Do realize that some of those activities are expensive. E.g. paragliding would cost 160chf. 25 minute
helicopter ride will set you back 900chf. Skydiving costs 850chf.

Zermatt is more lively tourist village. Verbier is laid back, spread out, and quiet. Zermatt
is 3 hours by train from Zürich, Verbier would be an hour longer travel time.

And how much interest is the cheese factory, vineyard, and caviar farm, when you can't even sample their products,
as it's cholov akum, Yayin Nesech, and caviar from sturgeon?
