Topic Wiki

Before you post, here are some quick notes about the ring (Updated August 2019), that have been discussed in this forum:

- More important that anything else - AYLOR before you buy as YMMV
- There are two types of Ring Doorbells - those that are battery powered (Doorbell/Doorbell 2/View Cam), and those that are hardwired (Pro/Pro Elite)
- Disabling the Wifi works to prevent recordings, and disabling motion zones won't alert you, but most people still think that ring will still be triggered on by motion
- There are many tools with modern Wi-fi routers - Circle, Google Wi-fi, etc that enable you to cut off your rings Wi-Fi on a schedule or manually
- If you have a hard-wired Ring, you can add a switch to the circuit to completely turn it off before Shabbos
- Some people have a manual switch, others have added a programmable relay.
- Other people cover the doorbell

Why can't you simply cover the camera (with something like a sticker or tape) for Shabbat?

Over time the glue on the sticker tape can ruin the camera's focus/lens

One for the alarm, one for Ring:
Was that custom made? I can't find any shunt switches remotely similar to those online.

Local alarm guy installed them.

ok
Any kind of light switch will work though. Just need something to break the circuit.

A regular light switch would work for low voltage doorbell wires?

thats what he said. light switch stops electricity flowing from one side to the other, regardless of voltage.

Exactly what I had done. Works like a charm
@bubbles @Ergel I found this on Amazon for $7, but the electrician I called was concerned about 2 things: 1) can this device go after the transformer when the power is 24v? and 2) if it goes before the transformer, is it safe to be cutting/restoring power to a transformer on a weekly basis?
Thanks for your advice/experience.

Wouldn't an electrician know the answers to those questions?

I would have thought so, but 2 guys I called never saw something like this device before. And 1 said he doesn't think you can put it after the transformer bc you're now at 24v and the device says 90v. So I'm wondering what the guys here did who got it to work.

Is this an option?

It's basically the same thing - something smart getting added to the line to cut the power to the doorbell - so I guess my question goes to @joeb1 also. can a switch handle the 24v after the transformer?

Link for switch I used:
https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Wi-Fi-Light-Switch-TP-Link/dp/B01EZV35QU?mc_cid=6c0e78c542&mc_eid=43be528f8a
Does anyone know if smart light switches (similar to this one) have the ability to program them in advance what time to go on/off?

Seems like after I spent hundreds on getting a Pro and a transformer (with the smart kill switch linked above - it’s on Amazon btw for $7) and wiring installed, Ring has added the option to set a schedule for turning off motion sensors. Has anyone tested yet? Does it alone seem to solve all the Shabbos issues?

Not here on the top right? Also in Motion Settings. Maybe you need to update app or maybe it’s only on the Pro and you have a different version?

I saw that. But that isn't to schedule. Have to do it manually. In motion settings it allows you to schedule alerts but not too actually turn off motion detection
