Yes, if you need the highest tier and have a use in a narrow time window, it can make sense. But I wonder if adding amex as a partner will encourage them to up the bonus to 150% on some occasions to encourage more people to buy.

Last time i bought with a personal platinum (a while back, I don't remember when) I didn't get 5 points per $, because it posted as a misc. charge. but it should get 3 ppd on a CSR and Citi Premier/Prestige

My favorite use of this development is US shorthauls. I no longer have to call to get UA fee waived, and I get a 40% discount over what UA charges for routes I frequently fly or book. The aspirational awards were always attainable by buying points. But the buying doesn't always make sense for last minute purchases, since there isn't always a sale going on and the rate for small purchases is not as good.

I’d rather pay 6000 + 30.6 over 10000 + 5.6 and having to call in, possibly a few times, and dirty my UA account... but no fee would be better.
