Paying for gas with a CC, is it worth it?
« on: August 28, 2011, 11:57:43 AM »
Most stations charge an extra 10 cents per gallon or so, which turns out to be about 3-4 cents per dollar. Thus, only if you get 5 percent cash back is seems to be worth it.

So do you pay for gas with a CC?

I don't see it being worth it - ever - only if you're trying to meet a threshold or when doing 00.1 transactions.

When it's 10 cents I don't see it being worth it. That's why I only fill up at stations that don't charge a premium for credit cards.

I wouldn't say most charge,  I also just fill up where there is no surcharge. And when there is most of the time a 3% card would also atleast break even and maybe net you a drop. Also you get the convenience of paying with cc

I wonder if other vendors will learn from gas stations?

I try to buy gas at stations that don't charge extra for a cc even though their prices are usually a bit higher then the cash prices elsewhere when you factor in the points it's worth it. and I use the PRG at gas stations so even if there is a cc premium I usually break even so it's still worth it for the convenience.

this has been unique to the gas industry for decades, probably won't change anytime soon.

Reason being that Gas stations make a certain profit per gallon regardless of price. Unlike other stores where the profit rises with the price.

You also need to factor in the time and hassle to go to the counter to pay with cash

10 cents per gallon difference at $3.90/gallon gas (current NYC avg.) is a charge of ~2.6%.
Should be basically a wash with PRG or even SPG, especially with time saved from having to go inside.

What about buying gas gift cards in a supermarket as a workaround?
BH this craziness still hasn't found its way to CLE yet.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I think he means that you can buy the gas cards at your supermarket with your cc and when you pay with them at the pump they should ring up as the lower cash price (atleast they did when i have used them in the past)

and in cle they don't have different prices for cash and cc

It depends on the gas station. For instance, IME Exxon charges the credit price.

I have actually used gc by exxon and have gotten cash price. Though the guy did have to take it into the store to swipe. Could be it rings up differently if you take it inside or at the pump

What about using speedpass? I have it linked to my PRG so I get the bonus points. But I think they charged me the credit price but when I was in NY and used speedpass self service I'm pretty sure I paid the cash price.

You say PRG is worth more than SPG!? I always found the opposite?

The problem with all these kind of things - buying a card with a discount - is that even the most organized person will end up loosing one once in a while thereby defeating every penny you saved. Think of NYC MTA cards? (although by now the discount is the same no matter how much you buy.)

Thanks.
Off topic: Foreign transaction fee (which the PRG has) applies to Canada as well, correct?

I have had a lot of trouble finding gas gift cards in supermarkets or anywhere else for that matter.
