Aa discontinued direct flight, rebooked stopover

My friends booked nyc-den months ago on aa. It was a direct flight. They are leaving on Wednesday. Just checked his floght and apparently they discontinued direct flights, and switched his flight without notifying him of the change. Can he force them to put him on a different airlines direct flight?

I call fake news on the no notifications from the airline. Check his emails.
