Places with Jewish History in Europe
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:26:39 PM »
I know a lot of places in Europe have Jewish history there but I am looking for the cities that have the most - specifically in France and Italy.
I am planning a trip and trying to figure out which cities to get to.
So if anyone can list any cities they have been to and what is there (shuls, kvarim etc) that would be most helpful!!  Thanks

I've been to many places in Europe and there is Jewish history everywhere. I found that one place with the most history packed into one area is Prague. Is it also a great place to spend shabbos. The Jewish Quarter is part of the main center of town, there are great hotels, restaurants offering shabbos meals and you can daven in the Maharals Shul.

If you are only interested in France ans Italy there is also an incredible amount of history there. Check out these books:

San marco, VCE, is probably the place where the most jewish books have been burned in history.

They even have their own nussach, so has Saloniki, Greece amongst other place.

Every little place in Italy and France have their own jewish heritage unless eradicated.

In Spain, you got many old Shuls that where turned in to Churches. But you could still find Jewish stuff all over that country

Germany has lots of old Jewish stuff that survived the Nazis

So my buddy's dad is a Rav and was leading his shul on a trip to Europe. In Poland, you apparently are required to use a local tour guide so they can suck more out of us.
So while they are driving, the tour guide takes the bus microphone and she starts her speech. "Poland is an agricultural country of 60 million people, whose main exports are..."
Rabbi takes the microphone and says, "Poland is Jewish cemetery where the blood screams up at you from the ground."
