Getting approved for a first time credit card
« on: September 01, 2011, 10:11:47 AM »
This thread is dedicated to ideas of how to get approved for a credit card for the first time. From what I understand there are five ways:
1: Getting someone with an established credit to guarantee/cosign you.
2: Becoming an AU( authorized user) on someone else's credit card, waiting 6 months and applying for a regular cc.
3: Getting a Store cc (eg Target, Macys, etc) waiting 3 months and then applying for a regular cc.
4: Getting a prepaid credit card like the Upside Visa Prepaid Card (rated top choice on CreditCardGuide.com)
5. Getting a student cc. like the Citibank Dividend card for college students. This option can be very useful if you can actually provide a letter of enrollment in any school/yeshiva.
Of course you can combine two options and it will be that much more effective. For instance, combining 2 and 3.

Why do you have to wait 6 months? Doesn't the entire card history show up on the AU's credit report right away? Also from what I've read being added as an AU only seems to help for citi these days.

You can also sign up for a secure credit card.

I don't believe Prepaid Credit Cards helps you build credit, Secured Cards on the other hand will help you build credit.

+1, Chase completely disregards it.

That could be but I'm pretty sure Amex acknowledges it. All I can say is that I know somebody that was an AU on an Amex Spg for about a year plus was a target red cardholder for 2 months and got approved for Amex Spg 10k credit line.

That sounds to easy. Add yourself to a cardholder with 20 years credit and bingo you got 20 years?

I can confirm that it did in fact work that way with me.

i'd like to add my brother to my sapphire card as an AU, but when i try doing it online, there's no place to put in the SSN of the AU? is there a way to do it?

If you live at the same address it might show up on his report even without giving in his social

sounds interesting, i've never heard of that... how would they know if he lives at my address? the card comes to my address, and i don't enter in his address anywhere. all they ask is for his name.

I'm not sure exactly but my wife is an au on my sapphire card and it shows up on her report even though I didn't give her social. Could be they check somehow if there is anyone with that name by your address

i hear ya, but my brother has a different address than me, so i don't think it would show up automatically. anyone know how to add a SSN to chase AU?
