Ceiling fan advice
« on: July 28, 2021, 01:15:43 PM »
Looking to buy a ceiling fan to cool down my bedroom.
Does anyone know what to look for?
Does it make a difference how many blades it has? Or how wide and long the blades are?
All advice is appreciated!

It is a matter of how big the room is. How high the ceiling is (for fit). How many revolutions per minute will be how much air it can move usually more blades means quiter operation but less energy efficient. Longer blades can move more air but take up more space and are less efficient due to drag which will make noise and put more strain on the motor making more noise. Generaly speaking most bedroom fans are similar unless they are marked high energy efficient in which case they will move less air (but may be cheaper to let run for longer). Check HomeDepot for air movement and then find one you like. (Other factors to consider are smart sensors that will turn on at certain times or temperature, built in lights or lights that can be replaced).

Advice is to make sure to buy a high quality fan and not just the one which looks nice in HD. The cheap fans end up becoming very noisy.

1. Where are you installing the fan? If it's replacing a light fixture, there are at least 2 things to consider: Can the box support a fan, and will you need a fan with a light kit

2. Look at the CFM rating, which measures air flow created by the fan. Saves you the trouble of comparing different number of blades, lengths, angles/attitudes, and speeds. Higher CFM rating means more air movement.

3. Longer blades are not always better, especially if the room is small or if there are sprinklers on the ceiling close by.  You can still get a high CFM with a 42" blade though it will of course be easier to find high CFM ratings on 52"+ blades

4. Assuming you have a flat (not sloped) ceiling there's an option to mount the fan flush or to use the downrod to lower it if the ceiling is high enough for that (may slightly improve airflow)

This, too, if applicable:

How high the ceiling is (for fit).

Replaced a ceiling fan in small bedroom a few years ago.  Based on the room size we needed blades  46" or less.  https://www.homedepot.com/c/ab/best-ceiling-fans-for-your-space/9ba683603be9fa5395fab90b9b26067  We needed a light, and to facilitate changing bulbs, we preferred the kind with 3 exposed bulbs over the ones with one or more bulbs encased in a removable bowl.  We got the cheapest HD fan that met those criteria and five years later, it still works and is whisper-quiet.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-Glendale-42-in-LED-Indoor-White-Ceiling-Fan-with-Light-Kit-AM212-WH/300937520
Maximizing airflow was less important to us, because if it really is hot enough to need the highest speed, then we turn off the fan and use the AC.  DK if that's an option for your room.

100% agree about the light kits - the bowls block so much light from the bulbs making it really hard to brighten the room. The exposed bulb style has its disadvantages too, especially if you don't like the look or expect to have the lights on while laying down.

If you're buying from home depot, try to get Hunter when it's on sale. It's definitely superior to Hampton Bay, though I wouldn't pay too much premium for it.

Ceiling fans do not cool rooms. They cool occupants. For average bedrooms just about any fan will accomplish that.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

The ones with the lights positioned above the fan can be annoying as the blades block the light while spinning. Has a slight flashing effect.
