Ritz Carlton cancellation

Anyone have any ideas how to cancel a points booking after the cancellation window expires without a one night penalty?

call hotel front desk and tell them your flight got cancelled.  They’ll usually waive the cancellation fee... TARB.

That only works if I call right before and is a full-on gamble because unofficially withing 24 hours I could end up on the hook for the full responsibility or at the very least, more than one night.
