Is an 18% gratuity tacked onto my bill for takeout/pickup at an upscale NYC eatery reasonable?

No. Not at all. Takeout/Pickup should be 0% tacked on or added. That's sort of the whole point of you picking it up.

When do you tip valet at a hotel?

When you drop off the car for the first time? Every time they bring the car? The final time that they'll be bringing the car?
I still don't really have an answer to this. Recently I stayed somewhere the bellhop was same as the valet, so tipped him when he brought stuff to my room at the beginning of stay and again when my car was loaded at the end of the stay.

I tip my barber $5, she works with my schedule and does a great job, its anyways $25 with tip.

My cleaning lady work fast as hell, I give her $20, its usually a bit over an hour

coffee im conflicted, is the 2-minute cold brew job worth 1$ tip? not imho, maybe 0.50. yes it matters bc I go out to coffee daily and just feel like the coffee person would be making $65 an hour if we all tip 1$

Also bartender?

I'm not cheap and I know many who struggle, but I know waiters who mAKE 100K A year..

If you want to vote Democrat, you are being very disloyal to Jewish people and very disloyal to Israel, Mr. Trump said.

How much do you tip your flight attendant?

Was on a flight DTW-HNL in J and saw a few people tip the purser at the end of the flight.

Happened to me twice recently. Once at Gruit, where they made a whole scene as if they were doing me a favor by removing it. They also had a cr@ppy POS system (is POS a pun?) where they couldn't figure out how to remove the gratuity the system had automatically added to my tab.

Then it happened to me at the newly opened Izzy's fried chicken, it was $3 and I didn't want another scene, so I just paid it.

Glad to hear I'm not crazy. If you're going to charge me the same $$ for taking my food to go, where you don't have to serve me or have me take up a table, at very least have the decency of not forcing the "gratuity" on me.

@AsherO, tipping aside for a sec, how was Gruit?
In order to understand recursion, you first need to understand recursion.

NYTimes had a whole piece on tipping for counter service: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/15/travel/ipad-tipping-gratuity.html
Conventional wisdom seems to be that when presented with the option, most people will just opt to tip so restaurants add the option to save on labor costs by paying their staff less. Tipping for pickup/takeout seems ridiculous to me. What are you tipping for and who would the tip even go to?
