Tipping Master Thread (Who to tip and how much)
« on: September 05, 2011, 04:36:02 PM »
Came across this article today. Was always curious if people tipped the housekeepers in hotels.

Do you?

Unless they would do something 'wow', I wouldn't.

But ask americans, they tip even if they get cursed out. Some defect from birth.

I never tip. When I pay so much for my hotel room, or restaurant meal, I don't expect to have to pay more than what the bill will be.
I pay that money to get served, otherwise I go to a kosher equivalent of Mc Donalds.

If you think of it, if a housekeeper gets $ 5  per day per room and makes 20-30 rooms a day, that would soon mean a $ 100 extra, not bad.

Soon, we will have to tip flight attendants, cashiers, ....
There are so many people who work hard for their money, and don't get a tip either.

Tipping should be abolished!

I usually tip if I'm staying in the hotel for longer than two days. And usually only when I run into them. Unless I'm in Israel where I  always tip and well.
And obviously only if they are doing a great job and actually cleaning.

Uhm, you do realize the large majority of a waiter's salary comes from tips, right?

Which is why restaurant owners tend to pay low salaries to waiters, knowing that people will tip anyway.
And besides, tipping should never be mandatory.

Why not tip the cashier in the supermarket, the pilot, the flight attendant, the policeman (the fine shall be considered as a tip instead), the clerk at the bank,.... The list is endless

Because that is not the accepted practice. Since it is normal to tip a waiter that is calculated into the price and into their wages

According to wikipedia, in the USA a boss is allowed to pay an employee less than minimum wage if the employee gets tipped.
The whole concept of tipping is starting to look like a charity movement, and should be abolished.
It is economically inefficient.

Tell that to the waiter pulling in $2500 cash a week.

Waiters get paid less than minimum wage as they are counting on tips.  Therefore I tip them.  (That, and they'll spit in my food if I didn't)

Housekeeping is doing their job and are compensated for it.  I fail to see why I should tip.

Stop tipping waiters and they will ask for a raise or leave to clean hotels.

I would tip anyone if they did a marvelous job, there is no mandatory tipping.

So why is it that certain restaurants will be 'kind enough' to add on the tip to your bill? Since when are there rules as to how much one should need to tip?

As long as you don't return to that restaurant, otherwise don't expect to get food that wasn't dropped on the floor or spit in.

Tipped employees (waiters, bellhops) make as little as $2/hour without tips, it's just the way the system is.

Only in fine jewish establishments :P
The biggest scam is that they add the mandatory 18% or so tip onto the price after tax, when in fact etiquette dictates that you tip on the price of the food before tax.  They'll fix that, but only after you ask them to.

Restaurants that have suggested tips on the bottom of their receipts are also often guilty of this.
