I actually laughed out loud at that last exchange :)

Just had this conversation (baseball caps) with my Rebbe from Israel last week (when he was in NY) -- I agreed that the cap works for me, but that his big beard doesn't allow him any incognito time.

Regarding tipping, I don't tip for a soda or water from the bar (water is usually self-service anyway), but $1 would be reasonable for a beer or alcoholic drink.  That's a normal tip when you are paying for them in a bar, so it would only be reasonable to tip that when the drink is free.

When do/Why do/Do you tip?
« Reply #48 on: February 13, 2012, 04:47:48 AM »
i've always wondered in certain cases, whats the point of giving a tip? for example when you take a taxi, why are you supposed to, or why do people tip, you're paying for the taxi service and on top of that he should get a tip? on the other hand in some countries tipping isnt considered "the thing" to do. (ex. in israel you pay the exact meter amount)
a waiter i can understand a slight bit more but still on that i question.

so the question is when do you personally give a tip? anytime someone does good service for you, even if he's getting paid for it? or only if thats "the thing" to do etc?..

your thoughts?

yup. i sure did see those threads, and i was looking for a more general thread, because if i post in there than some people wont open the thread because the title is about a specific thing, like i never opened the house keeping thread because it doesnt apply to me. thats why i usually like master threads for certain topics
unless you want me to title this "taxi, do you tip?" or "waiter do you tip?"

In the hot jewish areas like BP and Flatbush, the Taxi drivers, as well as the waiters are used not to get tips.

But, I would always give a tip if I feel the guy did more than needed for his job. If the waiter was super nice, or if the taxi driver waited a few minutes, or had to hear the babies crying, and didn't get nervous / angry etc..
And same is for delivery guys, if he did a standard delivery, then why budge, but if he had to go up steps, shlep big boxes etc.. I think a tip is in place.

Thank you, one needs to deserve a tip.

Its not my fault if they accept a job which doesn't pay enough, assuming there are tips.

You need tzedaka, that's something else.

A lot of places it is customary to tip. The service provided is based on expecting that tip. If you plan on going to a restaurant and not tip then how about letting the waiter know ahead of time?

-Restaurant: 15% is my usual, but if the service was really exceptional I'd go up to 18 or 20 and if it was abysmal I take some points off from 15.
-Hotel luggage porter: Usually $1 per bag or so.
-Barber: $2.

Can't really think of anything else off the top of my head.  I don't usually tip housekeeping, seems strange to tip someone you never see, but maybe I'm wrong here.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

so thats why i said i understand more of tipping a waiter, cuz sometimes they pay less. but taxis and delivery boys and baggers at supermarket etc..
my main issue is taxis, thats the truth. - the only time i think a taxi driver deserves a tip is if you are in a hurry and they got you there on time, or if he made an extra stop for you etc.. but otherwise, when these NY yellow cabs ask for a tip for a regular drive, i think its nonsense

-Barber: $2.

barber? why would u tip a barber? ur paying him enough for the haircut!
and what about taxis?

Same for taxi drivers. I am surprised you do not feel it is customary to tip taxi drivers in the US.
