friends and i went rafting in CO last week and the private tour was 900$ split 7 ways. then the guide (who was amazing and fun) mentioned to remember ur guide and see him afterwards if we want .. we got the hint. we asked around and they said avg tipping is 20% of the total bill. now isnt that crazy? isnt the guy getting paid as it is and now also expects 180$ tip?? i think tipping is a nice token thank you but to get 180$ for an hr and half rafting is itself a great income, but as a tip is way over the top..
thoughts?
(we tipped 90$)

I thought canoes tip and rafts don't...

What do people here do with UberEats? I think paying a percentage of an order to somebody whose labor isn't correlated to the value is absurd, so been giving $2 tips, but is event that necessary?
I agree with you - but from asking around it seems like people do give a percent.

You can ask the same question on a $900 dinner - whats the difference?

I would say 15-20 each.
Now what if it was your family of 7. Then I would go 50-100.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

When you get married do you tip the person officiating the wedding?

I have a harder time tipping the waiter that carried my food over a tour guide who was knowledgeable and enhanced the experience.

i feel like waiters are different than employees in any other business. it seems to be a thing to tip waiters.

are we to expected to start tipping the cashiers in Macys too? no bc theres something about waiters and barbers maybe that get tips. but not all employees thats stupid.

I agree -  which barber automatically adds 18% to the bill? I think waiters deserve to be tipped, not that its automatically added.

is it generally understood by the boss to pay the waiter less than a reg employee and depend on tips? that could be. but for an employee for a rafting company (and btw a random horseback riding ranch which i did as well) should get paid reg employee rates

Seems insane to me. Is there any service anymore for which I pay the cost and the employee gets paid by his employer, not by me?! Why has this become such a norm is the US?

I tip my barber $5, she works with my schedule and does a great job, its anyways $25 with tip.

Do you mean it's advertised as $20 and you gave $5 tip? I've never seen it listed including tip. Where is this place?
As a side note, did the going rate go up dramatically for Barbers or is it just me?

Went up a dollar or 2 before the virus and them again durning the virus and doesn't seem to be coming back down. On that note, I know a great barber in Lakewood who refused to raise his prices during covid. You can PM me for his number.

I feel like the average nowadays is $20-$25 and for a good cut $30+. My guy consistently went up about $2 every year.
Maybe it's time to switch Professions?  ;)
