Tipping for an Upgrade
« on: December 04, 2018, 12:22:19 PM »
I was talking to a friend of mine who always put a crisp $20 bill between his ID and his credit card when checking in to a hotel and boasted a 70% upgrade percentage.

i was wondering if this is a common practice and if yes what's the best room you have ever gotten with an old-fashioned bill slip?

does it need to be crisp

I have tried and while not keeping track I would say less than 70% successful

When my daughter flew I tipped in advance for curbside check-in, and the agent was super stingy and gave problems over minor overweight. Needed to reshuffle luggage.

People often forget that sometimes the amount your are tipping, is the same amount the upgrade/baggage fee would cost. Obviously not always, but definitely sometimes.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

I mean don't get me wrong, I tip all the time!
I tip in restaurants so I get seated even when I don't have a reservation
I tip my barber heavily even though I don't have much hair.
I tip the gas attendant but tipping on check in for a better room is more like a bribe.

What’s the point of a tip? To show your appreciation for his service? And if he can then give you a better service that’s even better? I mean your not paying his salary with the tips right? So what is it?

Either to show appreciation or to help ensure he will go above and beyond for you.

Call it a bribe!
I bribe to get upgraded at a hotel
I bribe to save $350 in overweight baggage charges when I fly

I bribe for these things and I can live with it

I'm not sure if this fits here, or in the ethics thread, but this seems a bit shady to me. I know the airline/hotel gives them the flexibility to do these things for customers, but I assume they are not supposed to use their discretion to line their own pockets.
