Just got into this situation myself today.
In early March 2021 (9 months ago), I upgraded my Everyday card to the Everyday Preferred for a 40,000 bonus after spending $2,000. I was billed at the time an annual fee which was pro-rated to my card membership year, about $60. Last week, I had the $95 fee billed to my account, and without much thought into it - or how long ago I got the upgrade offer - I chatted to downgrade the card.
This morning I got an email, that the 40,000 bonus points were removed from my account, and my account is now in the negative as a result. Chatted and called Amex but not getting anywhere. Anyone had success with getting Amex to reinstate the clawback points. If there are not reinstated, anyone have experienced with negative balance accounts, will Amex charge for those?
