beginners guide to gmail?
« on: March 17, 2014, 11:10:44 PM »
Hi!

I just set up some relatives with gmail, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good online guide to gmail, geared towards people who are coming from Outlook.

Thanks!

Thanks for your friendly replies!

I googled a bunch, but did not find a single guide that explained gmail well for someone who's used to the microsoft outlook style. These relatives are having a difficult time adjusting, and they are a little older than I am. If I had to, I could sit down with them for an hour and go through what they need to know, but if there was an online guide it would help tons.

Is there a thread you would recommend moving this to? I looked around before I posted, don't you worry!

why not use gmail in outlook?
because IMAP is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWW, and  they also want to be able to access their email from anywhere. They're not adverse to learning gmail, they just need a little help

how about the gmail thread
Don't know why I didn't see that one. Should we ask the mods to move this thread? Will people be more receptive to questions over there?

Most important things to understand is that there are no folders, but are called labels, so they would stay in the same place, but could be filtered by label and/or recognized by color.
gmail works with conversations, so an email response will typically be attached to your email, which is very useful to connect the dots in the communication.

If you could subscribe to this forum, gmail will be easy !

Good luck.

Right. I guess I'll have to just explain everything to them myself. :)

The best way to learn is by having to teach it.

I happen to know gmail very well, if I do say so myself. I just would rather not have to spend all that time teaching it, if there was a nice online guide I could just email. And I would save the link, because you never know who else will want a crash course in gmail.

Finally someone who's actually answering my question!!

I actually saw both of those :). The first one looks very out of date, and the second one is too techincal and too into productivity. But thanks!

I did not search, and it could be that I am wrong.  IMO, you may not find much.  Gmail is ever changing, and to make a tutorial would require constant updates.  You could probably get by with a 10 minute crash course per person and let them email you with questions.

Lifehacker.com is my go-to site recommendation for helping people learn things online.

Here are some of their gmail guides*:

because IMAP is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWW,
IME is very fast, mail comes in average 10 secs after my phone.

(Reason not to use gmail.com, when you are logged in through your company email account, they get to see how many times you visit ddf...)
