They are one and the same.

Account number usually refers to the bank account number and not the 16 digit number on the card.

Clearly, you have never:

  • Paid a credit card bill by check.
  • Ever had to call about a credit card through any phone number other than the one on the back of your card.
  • Actually paid attention to what it says on the sheet of paper your new card is attached to when it arrives in the mail.

There is a difference between a bank account linked to a debit card, where the account number and the card number are not the same. While in a credit card account the card number IS the card number.

For example, on AP you dont need to enter the 3/4 digit code.

The way I know it works (it probably differs from place to place), is that 1) you get a bank account, 2)you apply for a card that's linked to the bank account (and is not the same number as the bank account number).

There is a difference between a bank account linked to a debit card, where the account number and the card number are not the same. While in a credit card account the card number IS the card number.

You mean account number?

Citi calls the number on a CC the "account number".

Who even uses debit cards anymore, anyway? Especially with so many cool cards to churn. 8)

But seriously... we've been talking about credit cards. And credit cards' numbers serve as their account numbers as well.

Citi calls the number on a CC the "account number".

+1, and Chase often refers to the "card account number" when asking for the card number.
