Safeguarding Chase Freedom points
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:40:44 AM »
I recently posted asking which is the best credit card for a student. I got approved for the Chase Freedom with a 30,000 point bonus if I spend $500 in the first 3 months. What happens if I decide to return my purchases? Is there anyway to safeguard the points? I'm assuming if I transfer them to Delta, for example, they can still be used to fly somewhere. Is there any way I can put them somewhere that would allow me to fly any airline? I know Chase will remove points in the future based on those returns but I'm not worried about that now...

Sorry if this has been discussed already. I saw a few threads about transferring points but they all seemed to have been referring to AMEX and SPG (I'm not so advanced yet....).

You can't switch UR points to Delta.  And they will remove points from any returned purchases.
Are you talking about losing the sign up bonus?

UR = ultimate rewards? The customer service rep told me I can't transfer to any airline at a 1 to 1 ratio....it didn't really make sense to me. I guess that's what I'm asking...where can I post the points to that won't cancel them once I return the purchase. For example, if I transfer them to an airline, fly somewhere, and then return the purchases, they can't take them back.

If its a sapphire preferred then yes.  regular sapphire, no.

Why are you planning on returning your purchases? $500 in 3 months is really very low.  You cant legitimately spend that?

I don't think they have sapphire preferred :(

I'm gonna sound very spoiled but my parents pay for everything.  The problem is that they like when I use their credit cards instead of my own because they get more cash back.

Tell them you'll give them the 500 points for the spend this way at least you'll get the sign up bonus :)

Now we're talking! Ill try to get my parents to use my credit card for $500 so this can be done legitimately. Once that's done I can transfer points to co or ba (or participating airlines) and get my free flight?

FYI - If you purchase $500 and then return it, you need to be concerned with possible clawback.
