Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf
Grand Canyon National Park Lodges

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk
  • Bearizona Wildlife Park - Williams, AZ

Lake Powell (popular lake for boating, with kayak, motor boat, pontoon boat, houseboat rentals, Jetski, boat tours, and swimming). Lake and surrounding canyon walls are uniquely scenic together (it's actually a huge artificial reservoir surrounded by canyon walls, resulting from the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam

Anyone know of hotels in Phoenix with an indoor pool? (preferably owned by Marriott)
Or where the hotel pool (including pool deck) is likely to be empty for a significant part of the day?
So the family can enjoy (without compromising on our standards of Tznius).

It seems much less likely to find that empty with an outdoor pool, especially the nicer larger pools that seem common in AZ.

Most hotels we've been to in the past had indoor pools (further north geographically). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Marriott Camelback inn has a few pool suites. It’s so hot here that honestly an indoor pool is going to be even more desirable because it’s cooler. The opposite of the rest of the country!

I'm here now,

The beauty of the outdoor pool is that when you use it you don't feel the heat at all. When you come out of the pool, you actually feel cold for quite a few minutes, even when it's 110 outside.

Yes - The person was asking for a hotel. A rental home would probably be cheaper.

Ahavas Torah is the closest by like .1 mile. Young Israel is a tiny bit longer. I’d say leave a half an hour in this heat. Bring a few bottles of cold water with you. Lots of frum families on the way if you need to stop.

Planning to trip in August to AZ, with 4 days (5 minus one for travel), going to the national parks in Utah.
Given ages in the group, our interest is in easy/moderate hikes (preferably with bodies of water).

Any suggestions on how to allocate the time in Utah among North Rim of Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Moab, Canyonlands, other recommendation?
Is Moab too hot in August to enjoy? (seems pretty hot to hike there in August)
Any specific recommendations on hikes/sights?

Re: Arizona Master Thread - Unbearable Heat??
« Reply #1178 on: August 19, 2022, 02:04:08 AM »
Anyone had experience with vacation in Arizona/Casa Grande in the summer (Jul - Aug)? My concern is the temperate, is the heat unbearable??

Temperatures in Arizona vary widely. Pheonix/Scottsdale is much lower that other parts of the state, and therefore much hotter (think dead sea type climate). Sedona and Flagstaff can be 20-30 degrees cooler than Phoenix.

Although it's a dry heat (not humid), don't plan on doing outdoor activities in the sun in Phoenix especially anything strenuous, as it's often 100 or hotter for most daylight hours (not just a short peak for a couple of hours above 100). Even the (unheated) pool seemed to be a little too warm to be refreshing (though still fun), when we visited. We went to the science center, museum of music, olive mill tour, frozen yogurt, and drove around to see the city, for indoor activities during the day.

I would not be inclined to return to Phoenix (or South Florida) for a vacation in the summer. Other parts of Arizona have less intensely hot summers and may be better options.
