Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)
There are two trails from the south rim that go down into the canyon (and all the way to the canyon floor, which is a strenuous multi-day hike). You can experience a taste of it, by turning around at any point.
  • South Kaibab Trail - One of the top rated trails for the GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
  • Bright Angel Trail - Also one of the top rated trails for GC (trail descends into the canyon, uphill climb on return)
There are also trails along the south rim (called Rim Trails) that don't descend into the canyon, and are relatively flat. These offer views of the canyon and are dotted with various scenic viewpoints. Some areas of the rim trail are paved others are not. These may be more suitable those with young children or those fear of hiking near the edge of the canyon cliffs. The National park shuttle buses also transport passengers to various points within the park, along the south rim.
A PDF map of grand canyon national park south rim is at https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/upload/sr-pocket-map.pdf

Nearby attractions outside the National Park include:
  • Skywalk

The El Tovar Hotel is the nicest lodge inside the national park. Expensive in summer, reasonable in winter.

Hope so, I'm headed there end of Jan/ beginning of Feb. Seems temps in Sedona around then are in the 40s and 50s by day, and a bit cooler in the G.C, where it could snow but hopefully nothing crazy. We'll see...

We visited AZ for the final week of February and first 2 days of March and felt it was the best time to be there. Weather in Sedona was mid 60s to mid 70s for the high, and mid 50s-60s at the canyon.

A great benefit was the lack of crowds and being able to drive our rental on Rim rd at our own pace to view all the different lookouts and to hike. We had no issue finding parking at the pullouts. Beginning March 1st, private vehicles aren't allowed and they require you to take a shuttle.

We're considering repeating the trip this year while adding a day or two around Zion/Bryce, though I expect it'll be significantly colder and snowy in UT.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Williams with points when we were in the canyon area. It's pretty basic, but was updated and clean and cost far fewer points than the Holiday Inn Express at the canyon, which is also quite a bit more dated. There's also a brand new Hampton Inn in Williams.

In Williams there's also Bearizona, a drive-through safari. We didn't have time for it in the end but were later told it's not to be missed.

Sedona to Zion is a 5 hour drive.

We're thinking about starting out in Phoenix and basing ourselves out of the Hyatt in Page, AZ for that part of the trip. Mainly because we want to explore some of the well trafficked off-road trails in and around Vermilion Cliffs and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, such as House Rock Road and Cottonwood Canyon Road. We figured once we're there, we should try to fit in Zion and/or Bryce if possible. The off-road trails require dry weather, so in the fairly likely case that they're covered in snow (or worse, melting snow), we'll keep to the paved roads in Zion/Bryce instead.

GC stop on the way up to Page (a 1:15 detour) and possibly some time around Sedona (30 min detour) on the way back down to Phoenix for Shabbos. We're not planning to spend very much time at either location as they were the main focus of our trip last year. It's still 5h 25m PHX-GC-Page, but that's one way for a multi-day destination.

We did Sedona/GC/Bryce/Zion end of January/beginning of February 2020.  Weather was great! But we may have lucked out.  Sedona was in the 60s. Grand Canyon was cooler when we first got there in the morning, but by the afternoon, it was close to 60'

In Bryce- it was cold (30s or 40s) with snow everywhere.  We did the snowshoe tour- AMAZING!!!  The next few days it was frigid there but we had only planned that one day there anyway.

Has anyone done the Grand Canyon West Side?  I would love to know how it compares to the South Side, from those who have done both.  We did the South Rim a few years ago and loved it.  I'm wondering if we'll be underwhelmed on the west rim?  Plus the price to get in there is ridiculous!

I'm going to be in Phoenix for shabbos, landing 10:30 Thursday night in PHX. I had this pie in the sky idea to drive straight to the Grand Canyon and stay for sunrise, and then drive back.

Curios if anyone has ever done anything like that and where the best spot would be for a quick run in and out.

Tough ask because of yeshiva week but does anyone know someone in the Phoenix community that can potentially host a family of 4 (children ages 6 & 4) with a place to sleep for shabbos Jan 28 (Fri night the 27th)? Meals are taken care of.
