-If you plan on using public transportation, get an Oyster card. They are much cheaper and easier to use than conventional travel cards, and never expire. They can be bought in many stores in London, or online. These days one can use contactless credit cards instead of Oyster.(Check here to see if your foreign contactless card will work.)

-Here is a handy planner for the public transport system.

-DD's Kosher Sandwiches can be bought in most major airports and stations and at some supermarkets around London.  Check here for a list of locations.

-Kosher in the West End/City -

If you were going during times when you would sit in traffic it may have been a consideration. But considering you're travel times, I'd take the taxi

(I read this entire thread and it was quite helpful)

In terms of transportation to/from the airport to a hotel in central london - I understand that economically the best is the tube but it is 75-90 minutes. The express train costs 21 pounds per person each way but only takes 15 minutes and drops you off at paddington station. That means that if your hotel is not walking distance, you would still have to take the tube which can be another 25 minutes and a bit more money. Is it worthwhile to get a mni-cab ( http://www.exclusiveairports.com/) which costs 38 pounds to town and 31 pounds back if travelling with two people? I arrive Sunday at noon and depart Tuesday early AM (7am departure). The question is whether the convenience of being transported with luggage directly to/from hotel is worth the few minutes that one would save by taking the express + tube?

On Heathrow Express' site, you can buy a RT for 2 people for 50GBP. Not sure if you're going with someone, but that was a great deal for us. We took a cab for 5GBP from Paddington to our hotel but it was only a 5 minute drive.

So that would be a total of 60 pounds for two people roundtrip and a mini-cab in both directions would be 68 pounds door to door...

Well then you have your math. Time to decide. Remember, GBP-USD conversion...

Are you sure that price is not per person? 38 pounds does not seem correct

That is the price for a car to the Jewish areas. It shouldn't be more to the West End (assuming that's where his hotel is).

I had a 5 hour stopover and wanted to visit family in Golders Green, I had a door to door ride both ways and I got about half hour to spend with the family.

If your unfamiliar with the taxi system in London, whatever you do, don't get into one of those "black cabs" even if it's not black.

Doable. Heathrow Express is like 20 min to paddington and a cab from there is prob 10 min to Big Ben but Google Maps the cab ride to check exactly how long it is.

certainly doable. Figure 45 minutes to an hour for passport control and waiting for the train, and let's say you want to be back 1 hour before your flight. That means you should calculate 1.5 hours each way not including getting to and from Paddington, our of 7 hours that means 4 free in the city.

If you want to do public transport all the way: take the heathrow express to Paddington, then get on the Hammersmith and City line (underground) to Baker St. At baker St. transfer to the Jubillee line to Westminster, and you're at Big Ben. Should take about 15 minutes. Or take a cab as suggested.

American off peak is just 40K RT in coach.
I remember when a coke was a nickel, and you could buy VRs in OD.
