Hit the back of a cab, flipped over, and landed on my helmet.
Bentched gomel the following day.

Go to a bike store. They'll steer you right.  If you haven't gotten your key yet, you'll get a $10 coupon towards a helmet purchase. If you like in Brooklyn I'd recommend going to Roy's on Coney Island and Ave X, or REI in the city is good I think.
Thanks for your advice, I went to Amazon and bought a helmet

Sorry for bumping this ancient thread, but didn't find any more recent. I'm looking to buy my kids a first bike (will probably start with training wheels). Do I have to look for certain specs such as company etc. or at that stage it doesn't make a difference? Also, what size am I starting by, 12", 16" or above?
TIA

Just get a disposable from Walmart. Start with one which is the right size for the kid.

I would get online regardless, so I'm just wondering with which size would be the best to start for a four-year-old and for a five-year-old.

No need for any fancy bikes. Buy the  cheapest one. You want it a proper height that s/he can get on and off it properly.

Probably better to get in store at walmart because they put it together for you. Unless you live in Brooklyn that is, no walmarts there.
I'm not who you think I am.

I do. I'm not worried, though. I'm handy enough with these things. Thanks

Go to Toys R Is. They have a decent selection. For $10 extra they'll build it for you. Your kid can try the various sizes they have on display to find the one most suitable for him/her.

Take an extra 25% off of you dump (read: trade-in) an old bike with them. Or 15% off without. Until the end of May.
