I actually still use it to access my 4 year old call log and text messages, etc.

I've moved half a dozen centros, if anyone else wants want speak up now!

If you have a file manager (filez, fileman, resco explorer) you can copy over the following files: Messages Database for SMS messsages and PhoneCallDB for call log. You can copy these files from the old centro to the new one. NOTE: This would not merge with your current files rather overwrite them.

No idea what that plan is or why it wouldn't work on that plan, but it definitely works on Free & Clear, SERO, Fair & Flexible, etc and is the best phone for these plans IMHO.

I don't know why you shouldn't be allowed to have a Centro on any plan. There are no plan restrictions on the Centro.
If you can't do an ESN swap online I would go into a store or escalate the problem to tech support and then executive services if need be.

After you login to your account there is a pull down next to each line. You want. To choose activate a new phone. Follow the steps on the next screen
