United Question
« on: May 26, 2015, 12:56:43 PM »
Booked a miles flight from NYC to LAX roundtrip on United using miles.

After I completed booking I chose my seat for the flight from NYC to LAX but there were no seats to choose from for the flight back. It just says no complimentary seats are available and it offered to let me pay extra for a premier seat. Should I just wait till I get to the gate? I don't want to pay extra for a premier seat. My only fear is there are only 3 premier seats left (all middle seats) and a few first class seats.
Not understanding how it let me book a regular seat without any seats available.

Please advise.

Thank You

It certainly won't hurt if you wait.

Thanks for the reply Sam

Did a little reading online and found someone on FlyerTalk with a similar situation. Don't know the outcome but apparently seating charts are not a good indication of what's available on a given flight. Guess I'll wait this one out and hopefully get a decent free upgraded seat or at least a good seat on the flight given that apparently some good seats are blocked for Frequent Flyers, etc.
Hopefully wont get stuck with a middle seat in the back row.

I had this situation from LAX-EWR. Ended up getting two seats, not near each other and middles  >:(. Not the best experience.

Yup, seat map is not an indicator on actual inventory.

I was talking from experience with family members. Happened well over 10 times. Now I know that it's not always the case.

Well, right now I have no seat at all, my concern was getting to airport and them telling me there are no seats, standby, etc.. If all they have is a middle seat when I get there I'll take it. I just didnt want to pay $$ to get a premium seat that happens to be a middle seat.. MAYBE i'd pay it if it was a good seat since $75 or whatever the charge is worth it to me for a 5+ hour flight, but definitely dont want to pay extra for a middle seat.

I hope mileagejunkie is right. Doesn't seem like I have much of a choice at this point anyway.

If you have a ticket number they will issue you a seat.

mileagejunkie's case was probably that all economy seats were taken and they HAD to give them a seat so they HAD to give them premium economy for no extra cost. However, in most cases if there will be any seats in regular economy, even middle seats, they will give you that seat and if you will want the premium economy you will have to pay for it.

Just a follow up. On the plane now. Logged into flight manager last night (within 24 hours to flight). Saw some nice window seats available mid plane. Grabbed one. About 15 seats were available, sold out flight so I'm glad I took one.

Thanks for the replies.

Am traveling EWR-TLV on united, am confirmed on economy. We are 2. No regular sits available either direction, it's a full flight. Very few economy plus left (in the chart). I hope they will not bounce me.

They probably won't. But if you want, you can offer to be bumped, and you'll get a confirmed business seat on the next flight (plus compensation).

Nope. You can also look on UA's seat map. They have a square box when it's a regular seat and a longer oval/bed shape when it's lie flat.

They are just a bigger slightly more comfortable seat.
