I thought ESCOs end up costing more in the long run, as they tend to jack their prices up.
That depends on whether it is done properly or not. That said, I don't recommend for houses.

I'm dealing with high(ish, as that's relative) volume and multiple companies/brokers monitoring every change (including capacity), so while there is no crystal ball, we generally come out relatively safe.

How can that be cost effective and profitable?

that's true - that's why you either play the game - every year shop around for the cheapest, or don't do it

I'm really curious how they make money on this. From the amount of solicitation, they're obliviously making decent money. This isn't a some houses, it's a decent portfolio of a few k units.

Any downside to this? Like higher supply charges down the road like it used to be with all those scammer  agents back in the day?
No! It is just a $$ credit, i's not changing the rate/kWh etc.

You will need to have your ConEd bill to be able to sign-up.

Community solar is a program that allows ppl to benefit from solar energy without having to install solar panels on your own property

It works by allowing you to subscribe to a solar farm located in your area. The farm generates electricity and 10% is credited to your electric bill

yup.
this is one big scam encouraged by the city (and con edison).. they arent doing enough to get private homes covered, so they came up with this idea of having investing companies lease large roofs, payment for the panels comes from the investment companies and from the members monthly bill payments, and the power all goes straight to con edison.

if they cared about the consumer, they would offer more programs to get people solar on their own roofs.

and BTW, the "10% credit" they offer is almost completely offset by a new charge ("customer benefit contribution") they stack onto the fees... so the consumer comes out very little ahead

Isn that charge for only subscribers or for everyone? Of course the utility still needs to get paid even if there is the solar credit.

They already offer some of the best incentives. Solar is a no brainer in NYC (assuming you can take advantage of the federal tax credit)
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

that's key. if it was a refundable credit.. I can guarantee you every frum house in Brooklyn would have panels up

BTW, I have been a "member" of community solar since the program started a few years, ago, and have my own panels since last summer

It is not so easy to have adequate roof space in NYC

it's a big mess now, so I would wait a bit b4 subscribing. these companies are being incentified to open solar farms, but con edison isn't following up with the credits.. basically, the whole system is backwards and messed up
(the original farm owners are 200k in debt waiting for the city or con edison to pay them back)

It is not so easy to have adequate roof space in NYC
why? (not falmilar with BP and willli, but most houses in CH and flatbush have space)
