13 reasons why it's PERFECTLY FINE to buy price mistakes

DOT Update:

http://www.dot.gov/airconsumer/united-airlines-mistaken-fare

United Airlines mistaken fare

The Department of Transportation is aware of an issue involving mistaken fares on United Airlines’ Danish-facing website.  The Department's Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings has begun looking into this matter, including speaking to United and reviewing consumer complaints.  That Office will gather all the relevant facts before making a determination as to whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares.

To file a complaint with the DOT - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/escomplaint/es.cfm

Sample complaint:
-------------------------------------------
To Whom It May Concern,

Yesterday I purchased a flight itinerary from United Airlines via their website: United.com. The flights were booked, I was issued a 'confirmation number' and my card was charged for the full amount of the fare. A short time later United.com indicated that my itinerary was "confirmed and ticketed". I have attached a printout from United.com showing this, as well as a printout of my receipt indicating that the airfare was booked, ticketed and paid for.

Yesterday I was informed by United that they had voided my itinerary. This was done without my knowledge and without my consent.

As such, I ask that you please compel United Airlines to honor the ticket which they sold me, and to provide compensation for their grievance and the inconvenience which it caused me.

Thank you for your consideration and assistance!

Best Regards,
Yosef_S

United is looking into an issue whereby a third-party software provider applied an incorrect exchange rate for tickets sold from the airline’s Denmark website. We have temporarily suspended sales from the Denmark website and are working to resolve the issue with the provider

We will void the bookings for those who purchased tickets as a result of a third-party currency conversion error.

I did the same. Have four trips booked. One with a return and one without for two destinations.

I believe I know the reason this is pricing this way. Looking at my receipt, I see something similar to what many other posters here have seen:

Airfare:   5,522   GBP
Equivalent Airfare:   56 DKK

Something clicked though on a previous post: the European and American meaning of decimals and commas is reversed.

So if I type into Google: "5.522GBP to DKK", does anyone care to guess what pops out? 55.51 Danish Krone.

There's no way this gets honored.
Nicely done.
Which may mean that this glitch has been around for a while

Anything not touching the USA will nearly certainly be cancelled by the airlines.
Booked LHR > EWR.
United site says confirmed and ticketed.
You still think less than 10% it gets honored?

I know it's unlikely they will honor these anyway, but I would be weary of anything that may given them another excuse to cancel your ticket

My co-worker booked two trips separately instead of multi-city. london to italy and back and then london to new york one way. his new york is confirmed and tickets (none of mine are ticketed/confirmed).

He's asking if he should call to combine them to increase the chance of it being honored. What do you think?

There is something in the DOT law about if it was an advertised price outside the US and if it applies - read here - http://airconsumer.dot.gov/rules/EAPP_2_FAQ_01-11-2012final.pdf

not sure of EU laws though

And I quote:

"Does the prohibition on post-purchase price increases in section 399.88(a) apply in the situation
where a carrier mistakenly offers an airfare due to a computer problem or human error and a
consumer purchases the ticket at that fare before the carrier is able to fix the mistake?
Section 399.88(a) states that it is an unfair and deceptive practice for any seller of scheduled air
transportation within, to, or from the United States, or of a tour or tour component that includes scheduled air
transportation within, to, or from the United States, to increase the price of that air transportation to a
consumer after the air transportation has been purchased by the consumer, except in the case of a
government-imposed tax or fee and only if the passenger is advised of a possible increase before purchasing
a ticket. A purchase occurs when the full amount agreed upon has been paid by the consumer. Therefore, if
a consumer purchases a fare and that consumer receives confirmation (such as a confirmation email and/or
the purchase appears on their credit card statement or online account summary) of their purchase, then the
seller of air transportation cannot increase the price of that air transportation to that consumer, even when the
fare is a “mistake.”
A contract of carriage provision that reserves the right to cancel such ticketed purchases or reserves the right
to raise the fare cannot legalize the practice described above. The Enforcement Office would consider any
contract of carriage provision that attempts to relieve a carrier of the prohibition against post-purchase price
increase to be an unfair and deceptive practice in violation of 49 U.S.C. § 41712."

Question is, will they find a way to wiggle out of this one because of the Denmark booking/US billing address issue?
If you're in the financing or e-commerce business, and need capital to grow, we should talk...
