Used to be you could buy from any dealer and it was really cheap, I don't think they do that anymore.

I called the dealer I got my Toyota from and was quoted 1898 for an 8 year warranty.  Midwestsuperstore wants 900 for the 8 year/75k and 1545 for 10 year/100k.  Warranty is transferable for free and and if car is totalled you get credit for unused portion.  Going to buy from Midwestsuperstore.

I guess you can still do it, 900 for 'bumper to bumper' is a very good price.

Toyota warranty can also be cancelled and refunded on a pro-rata basis when you get rid of the car.

The dealers do mark up those warranty prices though. I had a really nice finance guy once who wouldn't let me turn down the warranty and gave it to me for $50 above the printed book price so that I would agree (1k + 50 for 7 year platinum, sienna). The next month I went back to the same dealer to get the same van for a family member, difference finance guy quoted me $3200 for the warranty. I said I want to pay 1050 and he said impossible, had him look up my previous deal and he got grumpy and said no deal. Bottom line, negotiate to get the best price from the manufacturer but if 3rd party is still cheaper go there.

I bought an 8 year warranty on my Honda - used it 2x.  First used it to replace the DVD player and second time to change the alternator.  I can't say that it was worth it but it definitely gives peace of mind.  The warranty came with included roadside assistance as well.

I am buying the extended warranty now for the same reason - peace of mind and it increases value of the vehicle for sale to another party as you can sell with a factory warranty.  You may never end up using it or it could end up being cheaper to fix anything that comes up without buying the warranty.

Like PBaruch said, it's often a peace of mind buy (i.e. ideal form of insurance). I'm most worried about the computer chips and sensors that are hidden throughout the car, not as much the engine/transmission which are well known for durability. If anything the warranty is more worthwhile when the car is a few years old than when it's brand new

I've always come out ahead, (unfortunately).
Half the trick is to remember you have it years down the line, I'm sure many forget they have it. Also, don't buy one that ionly covers a list because the things you need will never be included.
Buy the ones that include everything except wear parts.

I know someone that bought a used car from the dealership, and bought the extended warranty from them.
The car apparently was a lemon, since they had to replace the transmission twice, thankfully covered by the warranty
