Switching Credit Cards from the same bank
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:58:06 PM »
Just wandering, in general, are you able to switch a credit card for a different one from the same bank without applying for the one you want to switch to and having your score pulled?

Generally yes, but it depends on the switch.  For instance Amex will let you switch between non-branded card, but not into a hotel card.  Each bank has it's own policy and sign up bonus points are trickier to nab.

Which card do you have and what do you want to switch to?

AMEX blue and want to switch to SPG, but based on what you said that won't work; unless you have some sort of way around?

Call Amex and ask, their policy has changed on this several times AFAICR, but don't expect a signup bonus.

do you have any idea how long the process would take if they allow it?

will i be left at all with no working card? or will the old one cancel once i activate the new one?

I had a generic AMEX and wanted to switch to SPG and was told that the "hotel cards have a different approval procedure" so they could not do it.

If they let you, and give you trouble with the bonus, wait for the card and send an SM asking for it.

Although it's not a problem to switch from a branded card to a non-branded card.  I switched wife's SPG to a Blue and it was instant --- same account number too.

No.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
