I had the same problem on a round trip domestic ticket. On the outbound I showed our marraige certificate by security and the tsa agent called over a manager who said it was no problem. On the inbound they didn't even ask for it.
Definitely bring your marraige certificate. That should be fine enough.

So you didn't even change the name on the ticket?

Nope. The ticket had our married last name and her id, her maiden name.

I booked AA with Avios. Can I just bring my marriage certificate to LGA to the AA check in desk and be okay?

1) Flying international makes it more of a problem.
2) If they do have an issue. AA will tell you go to BA. And BA will tell you its a points booking so they cant get you on another flight, you will have to rebook.

That said, im not trying to be negative. But my story is recent, from the same airport, same airline, & same thing as far as points. Just make sure you are prepared with other travel plans if these fall through. If you get through its a miracle. When my story happened everyone i spoke to (including highups) told me that there is nothing they can do. I wish you lots of luck! I pray it works out... Let us know...

Crazy story you had, but 9 times out of 10 (and given enough time and conacting the right ppl) marriage certificate is plenty to prove who she is.

For Domestic travel you can board an aircraft even if you forgot or lost your ID. TSA will ask you some questions. For international travel, it is a bigger deal, but rarely will the airline make you lose the ticket, unless you are a completely different person  ;)

You can always change and update the Secure Flight Information a.k.a. your name and date of birth. Having that accurately always helps.

Update: Check in at the beginning and at the gate didn't even ask any questions.
TSA did ask and the marriage certificate was good enough. Just had to ask for his supervisor.

And in YUL, check in did ask and the marriage license was good. Security didn't look and customs didn't ask.
