I think most credit cards cover a spouse.

Wrong, CC only covers users and AU's. Unless he meant that he's an AU, otherwise I don't see them allowing him to use someone elses card anyway.

It should work if he puts the rental on his wifes name.

My understanding is that cc insurance will cover any driver which is permitted to drive by the rental agency eg additional drivers or spouses. When you say 'put it on my wife's cc' do you mean you will be the renter but will  paying with your AU on your wife's cc account or your wife will be the one renting with her card?

I would think the cc holder needs to be the primary renter.

@myb821
Would they you put her as primary even though she ot with you?

As a general rule they won't rent you a vehicle without a CC in your name.
Most rental agency's usually require all additional drivers to be there to sign,exceptions include spouse and fellow empoyees when renting with a corparate, however the CC holder has to be there

Yes I know that. Exceptions would also be 1) if he's renting at a hiemishe place 2) he is friendly with the staff at his local avis/Hertz etc.

As far as adding additional drivers,  they wouldn't need his spouse to be there so maybe they would agree to make her primary instead of secondary.

They don't need the spouse there b/c you don't need to add the spouse to the contract the spouse is automatically authorized to drive. But to make her primary she would have to go to sign off on the rental

IME they made CC holder primary renter

I've been able to switch it afterward to secondary, but I guess YMMV.

I was referring to the actual renting. Regarding switching afterward I have never tried it, but I will next time
