Pointers for delayed in plane flight compensation
« on: March 18, 2024, 05:56:55 AM »
We (party of 3) are flying out of CDG to Newark on United. While taxiing, we got a status update that due to a safety issue, we'll have a delay and the plane will stay grounded till they check and see if they can fix it. Seems like a #boeing problem (flight #UA 56).

Are there any pointers/links for

1. Getting on a new flight if the delay ends up grounding the plane
2. Getting compensation for the flight in the form of vouchers or cash

We used a united business mileage plus card for taxes and this is an award economy ticket. So far the delay is almost reaching the 2 hour mark and the status on the united app says Return with a red button.

EU mandatory compensation might kick in if flight arrives more then 3 hours late (not sure though as it's an award ticket)

It was just over 3 hours so that's good.

Going to give it a try thanks!

Remember EU compensation is tied to delayed ARRIVAL not how much time you spent on the plane waiting to take off.
Theoretically, an airline could pad the expected arrival time by hours and never ever need to pay EU comp, even if it took off hours late.

Except for the duty to care part
That kicks in on departure delays

Side note; the comp offers are

600 euros per person
50k United miles per person
1000$ United travel credit per person

Given these options curious what any of you would pick.

$1000 travel credit seems like the best option assuming you fly united and pay cash somewhat regularly

My  prizes from CV :)

Nice! Did you write in or did they offer it proactively?

I wrote in on united.com/feedback. From what I read online if you don't they certainly won't offer and you should apply as early as you can.

I mentioned the EU 261 law when requesting too.

Nicely done, which compensation did you pick?

Anyone know the current TLV compensation offers?

Anyone know the current TLV compensation offers?

I ended up going with cash compensation. Currently found a hidden offer to do status matching magic through my employer so I won’t be flying United for the next 6 or so months and I have enough chase/cap1/citi points to codeshare or book directly anyways for my regular flights.

Another side question, I got a seat that pitched way too back on the above flight and United offered me a 75 $ travel certificate for it. I have a feeling I could have negotiated better but was pretty good with that result. Does anyone have any experience with getting a better deal?

The flight attendant gave me her phone and had me enter that I accept the compensation along with my email. The other options were to not accept or to request a customer service callback. Probably the best thing I could have gotten out of it would be a seat upgrade certificate for a future international flight.
