It's a European Television Broadcast Association thing.

Are you familiar with anything of the sort anywhere else? Do US states have such a contest? Even if you compare it to something like a Miss America, where various states have their own "submissions", I don't think that gets this much attention.

Seriously? Making this a national issue? The songs rarely have anything to do with nationality, and while years ago songs were mostly in national languages, IINM they are now mostly in English. Besides many (if not most+) of the "artists" represent "progressive" values.
