Seeking help -with ideas avlb to cover floor vents.
« on: May 22, 2024, 04:26:38 PM »
There used to be these old big clunky looking vents. I hated them. Re-did the flooring and put new base moldings.
Now the question is what type of floor vent can I use. Or modify to make work. Don't care to cut the flooring further to make a standard vent fit if that's my only option. Or take an angle grinder and shave away untill flush the standard vents. So one side fits in while the other sits on the floor.

What idea do you have in mind that would work. There's about 10-15 vents throughout the home that have from the floor.

Here's what the old vents look like and the dimensions of my floor vents.

12-1/2 × 1 3/4.

I am glad I never have to deal with those vents anymore.
Do you have access to the duct work to the vents? Can it be moved for a flush mount floor vent to be used?
Did the vent originally sit flush to the wall and the molding butt up against it?

something like this? it gets sanded and finished with your floor.

not sure if this is a good one but there are plenty of places that sell them.

I'm hoping for the same. But I'll have to deal with it now.

Do you have access to the duct work to the vents?
Unfortunately not. Don't have access to the whole basement. So that's not an option. And already put sheetrock around the whole place so not making new holes and making a whole mess.

Can it be moved for a flush mount floor vent to be used?
How exactly? Only way if I make a fake cutout for it to sit flush.

Did the vent originally sit flush to the wall and the molding butt up against it?
Yes it did. I was originally going to buy new vents and put molding up till each side of that vent. But once I redid the floor and moldings.  Away with that idea.

No good suggestions, sorry.
I will mention that the molding will now restrict some on the airflow. Times that by 10-15 and it is something that needs to be considered.

Yes you can get them everywhere and they are nice. Did I mention I have them in some rooms?  :)
The problem is trying to get them to work in his situation.
ETA: Not sure if you want to go this way but they make some nice wood baseboard registers.

Ordered a few. Will see what fits.  And lowes seems to have such grates as well.
