I know a guy that just did it himself and somehow killed the compressor in the process, not sure how he managed that but that was the outcome

Thats what im afraid of. Anyone ever use this guy by food ex?

it was weekly because it had a bad leak to start with.

Probably by not following the instructions, or overcharging.  Not difficult, but if you are not b'chlal handy, then pay someone.  I have done both my hvac and car ac.  Specifically on the hvac, I have saved hundreds of dollars.

+1. i have filled up a few cars,as long as you can follow the instructions and use the gauge you will be fine

do you empty the old gas/free on before you put in the new stuff?

old freeon works just as well as new,it doesn't lose effectiveness over time,the only reason to refill is when there's a leak afaik

According to a Mexican mechanic I know, free on mixture also contains gas and when the freon gets used up the gas still remains inside and has to be vacuumed out. It will still work if you add freon without vacuuming but it won't be as cold

Freon does not "get used up".  It recycles through your system.

FWIU, the reason sometimes a system must be vacuumed out is to remove moisture.  But this usually only needs to get done when the compressor is opened up/worked on.  Not in a normal charge.

Again, by definition "freon" is a gas.  There is solid, liquid, gas.  Freon is a gas.

good thing I quoted the Mexican on this one as opposed to making as if I knew what I was talking about, but after a quick google search there is moister which is supposed to be vacuumed out before replacing freon
