Are you sure you need it to actually post to UA? I would think (not sure though) that once the statment closes Chase sends the miles over to United and then you will get the miles, as any time difference is just while United updates their system.

I don't think you are correct, I know this was discussed previously and I am pretty sure that the conclusion was you can close a card with a balance due still on it

You can probably close a card that still has a balance, but ime you can't transfer all the credit from the card if it still has a balance

Yeah they do. And I'm not sure about doing it through SM.
For Ex though you can downgrade the Sapphire Preferred to a regular Sapphire.
