*G lounge access at EWR

I'm a little rusty on how the lounge thing works... if someone is flying EWR-TLV on UA and has a European/Asian *G number on their boarding pass (say, Aegean or Turkish)  but doesn't have the physical card with them, are there any lounges (United Club or other) they can access? How about if they do have the physical card? Also, can they bring a companion?

At the UC in CLE, they just asked me to log into the account online to verify the information, and allowed a companion

Which airline was the status? And doesn't it say "Gold" on the boarding pass itself?
