Amex points transfer
« on: April 27, 2010, 01:59:20 PM »
Anyone know the answers to the following questions?

Conversion ratio of amex points into AA or BA?

can they be transferred into someone elses's mileage account?

any fee for transferring?

thanks.

AMEX to BA is 1:1.
You can't transfer AMEX to AA.
They can go to someone else's account.
There is a fee of $0.0005 per point, but only for transferring to domestic airlines.

Thanks Dan.

So i take it BA doesn't count as domestic, so no fee there?

Would u say this is the only fullproof safe way to buy miles/points, because the second you do the transaction the miles are yours and you can pay with peace of mind?

Starwood point transfers would also be foolproof I suppose.  But are people on this site really going to run off with your money and cancel your ticket? Seems hard to believe.

No fee for BA and no limit, but BA miles ain't great.

The issue with starwood transfers is that I cannot transfer their points into my name.

I'm not saying that everyone will run off with my money but, it COULD happen and I cannot play with that under any circumstances.

BA works for what i need.

Is the transfer to someone elses name OK with AMEX or is it oficially not but doable?
In other words, is it gonna work every time I do it?

You can transfer Starpoints, you just need to have the same address on file...

With AMEX I've never heard of anyone having an issue transferring to someone else.  I've transferred my AMEX to someone else's BA without a problem.

If its the same last name then shouldnt be any problem

So i just tried to do this twice and no go. I spoke to a supervisor as well and they would not let me transfer from my wife's account to mine. As idiotic as this sounds, she said the only "one-time exception" they would make is if we close her account and there is a balance of points, we would be able to transfer them to my account. I explained to her that i would be closing the account for the sole purpose of making the transfer and it would make sense to keep the business and make the one time transfer without closing the account. She wouldn't budge. Apparently, they would rather us close the card.

If you're eventually going to transfer them to an airline and the names don't need to match, what difference does it make to have the MR points in two different accounts?
Unless you plan on transferring 100's of 1000's of points where the fee would be less if they all come from one account...

I took a points advance a few months ago on my account. Id rather transfer the points from the wife's account than use the card to accrue the needed mileage.

It's very difficult, but there are reps that will do the transfer.  I know someone once convinced a rep to transfer 250K to my account.
Otherwise sounds like its time to open a new AMEX.

And that wasn't even claiming to be transferring to a spouse...
Seems like most other things, YMMV.
