Health Insurance/Medicaid for Pregnant Woman
« on: April 16, 2013, 09:45:34 AM »
My wife is a bit over four months pregnant and we are having some issues with insurance. She has quasi insurance from her school which ends in August and i make a bit more than what is allowed to qualify for Medicaid. She spoke with someone at LRRC who said that when her insurance expires we can most likely get on Medicaid. The issue with that is she is expecting in September and Medicaid can take three months to get on. This leaves us with no insurance from August onward and only may get on and have Medicaid reimburse us for the hospital bills. Does anyone know of any possibility to apply now and have Medicaid start in August or even a low cost insurance that she can get on?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I know your Location says  NY, but it would help if you would confirm it.

Additionally  there is a thread about Jersey Care, I'm not sure if that would help you.

I have been reading the NJ Medicaid thread, The situation my wife has is very unusual one and have not seen any discussion on it.

I know they say it can take 3 months to get onto JerseyCare but can be faster. Took us only a few weeks (about 3-4). So it def can't hurt to send in the application asap

If we do send it now and they deny us ( because she officially has insurance until August), do we have an opportunity to review it with an actual person, or do we again need to reapply closer to August? My wife has tried to get in touch with JerseyCare but can never get someone who can help, even going to the location, they could not offer any insight. I would love to believe that they have some kind of expedited processing for someone in a situation like ours, especially if it is going to be the end of the pregnancy.

I can't speak about NJ specifically, but my understanding is that most states have an emergency medicaid option for situations like your wife's. Contact them now and inquire about it.

Don't know about NJ, but in NY, when you apply, coverage starts from when you apply (or even up to 3 months before the date you apply). And in the meantime, you can explain that you're Medicaid pending.

But let's say in the end... You are denied.
That's very nerve wrecking.

You make more than the limit for regular Medicaid for your family, or for a pregnant woman/prenatal care? That's usually a higher limit.

Generally there is absolutely no problem having JC as a secondary insurance.
If you are above the income limit there are plans through the state where you pay a little towards the insurance.-for kids/pregs
Explain why they said its necessary for her insurance to expire first, is it because the state plans have a no secondary rule? If yes there may be a look back period...  if you explain the situation better we can learn and possibly help!
Also, if wife under 26 she eligible to stay on parents plan.

Do you know which plans offer the paying a little towards...?
The reason why we will not be accepted until her insurance expires is because i earn above their limit. If she has absolutely no insurance, they raise the allowed amount.
She is under 26 but her parents are Canadian. She has a green card.
Thanks for the help.

Are you interested in staying on your current coverage if you only pay for it same price as school?
Airlines sending me "We're in this together" emails.

Bruh, where were you when my suitcase weighed it 51.50 pounds?

The insurance through the school is horrible and finding an actual doctor still located at the address they provide is almost non-existent.
Would prefer to get something else.
