Best Digital Camera in the ~$250 range?
« on: April 28, 2013, 04:02:09 PM »
Title says it all.

Anyone know cameras more than me that can give some recommendations?

I'd like a small(ish) point and shoot.

What are you looking for in the camera? Zoom? Size? specific features?

Frankly, I defer to you and DDF aside from the sole criterion stated above: "small(ish) point and shoot."

It's been awhile since I've kept up with the latest developments in the field.

FWIW, I asked someone and he recommended:

Canon PowerShot S110
Canon PowerShot SX260
Nikon COOLPIX P7100
Nikon Coolpix P310

S110 looks great but is above your budget.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I'll table that for now.

If there isn't a contender in the $250ish range, I'll have to consider it.

Personally you threw me off with the $250. If you would have said less than I imagine you would have gotten a lot more responses such as these:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Wide-Angle-Recording/dp/B00AWYN0BU/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-ELPH-300-HS/dp/B004J41T7Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1367240676&sr=1-2&keywords=canon+elph

But you said you wanted to spend around $250 which implies wanting a better camera.  Off the top of my head I don't know any that I specifically think are worth paying more than the above on except for the ones I posted at the beg and those are above your specified limit.

Nah, I don't have to spend $250. I just threw that out there as a starting point.

If I can get a better camera, perhaps like one you suggested above (Canon PowerShot ELPH 300), then maybe I'll just do that.

Was just hoping someone with more experience than me had insight.

Thanks for the help.

Just a camera to take a long on our trips... so scenery, activities, stills, etc.

General all-purpose.

This is the Amazon best seller in Digital Cameras - and it looks great, also has amazing ratings: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Stabilized-Wide-Angle/dp/B0075SUK14/ref=zg_bs_502394_1

Wide Angle is just letting more view into the frame.

Great for scenery. As well as taking photos of a large amount of people and if you're in a tight spot and close to something/someone it works well then too.

IF you check the description on amazon there is a pic/example.

Yes wide angle is amazing for cramming a lot more into the picture.

Here is why I love my ELPH 300:

  • Very light; I barely notice it in my pocket
  • Great grippy texture so it doesn't slip out of your hands when they are sweaty
  • Quite good battery life
  • Fast start up
  • Cheap: I got it on sale for about $125
  • really wide angle to get tons in the frame

There are things I wish it had like faster shutter speed. I cannot take pictures of my kid unless she is standing still. Also wish it had wifi and gps.

IME most people don't end up using these features even when their camera has them. And they use up battery.

S95 refurb for $229.
(If you buy 2 they're $217 each.)

Considered one of the best P&S of all time.

Thinking of getting it myself though I'm still not sure what the advantage will be over my $99 Elph 110.

Consumer reports has a good vort with regards to more expensive items. They say that you are most likely paying for features that you will not need.
I would strongly recommend getting a simpler cheaper camera if you are not into fancy complicated picture taking.
