Soap is usually made from non-kosher fat. Detergent is made from chemicals.
The soaps are pagum (have a bad taste) and do not cause a kashrus problem with dishes, but nevertheless we recommend soap with a hechsher. If it’s a detergent it doesn’t need a hechsher.

It is generally assumed that dishwashing detergents are not edible entities, and halachically they do not have a non-kosher status, even if they contain non-kosher ingredients, as is often the case. Nonetheless, some Poskim maintain that it has been the established minhag Yisroel (Jewish custom) to use kosher detergents on plates, pots and utensils that come in contact with food. An OU on a detergent insures the kosher status of that product. That said, if one used non-certified dishwashing detergent, Bidieved (after the fact), the kosher status of the utensils would not be compromised.

I grew up in a family where they laughed whenever "Brooklyn" decided non-food items needed a hechsher, such as plates, cups, tablecloths, etc. So it's very hard for me to accept that a "Minhag has been established" to use certified soaps. I would imagine that Minhag exists in certain communities and not others, even if it's the OU saying it exists. Nonetheless, obviously asking one's Rav is the right way to go.

This YW thread is a perfect example of an axiom I heard described recently. 

It used to be that being an Orthodox Jew was hard.  Now that it's so easy, many feel that they have to add chumras and made-up halachos because they feel that they don't get credit unless it's hard.  And the for-profit kashrus organizations laugh all the way to the bank...

Just pointing out that the question of non kosher soap is not a modern issue. So there is definitely a possibility of an established minhag which should not necessarily be dismissed.
