I was wondering the same thing re points under another's name. I had a problem with Hyatt doing this (first and only time doing it). Basically had to get the manager involved, was a whole ordeal... I would like to try this with the Ritz in SFO, but am hesitant because of the one time with Hyatt.

if done right you should have no issues. But if your gonna be a noob about it you will get screwed.

Very simple. You have to be slick about it. Don't go calling the hotel a million times asking about your reservation just make sure it is booked the right way and check in by yourself under your own name. If they ask you about the account holder say his flight was delayed. Once you have the room bring whoever you need in the room.
