Water Bottle for Hiking
« on: July 28, 2015, 07:41:49 AM »
As I see it, there are 3 options for water bottles for hiking, some that focus on quality, some on convenience. Any opinions about what to get?

1) Hyradoflask ($29-40) and can also buy a straw cap to make drinking easier. (Dan's favorite)
Pro: Actually keeps water cold for very long time
Con: Would need to carry it in a backpack and still need to keep refill of water in the trunk/cooler/ice

2) LifeStraw ($33)
Pro: No need to bring water with you, as it can filter water that you come across while hiking
Con: Water won't be cold and would need to carry it in a backpack

3) CamelBack Backpack ($41) Lots of options, this is just one example.
Pro: Can be worn and has a slot for your phone, so no need to carry anything else and can hold ice to keep water cold for some time
Con: Most expensive option, water won't stay cold for as long as Hydroflask and still need to keep refill of water in the trunk/cooler/ice

Can someone please delineate the pros and cons of all the different types of water bottles for hiking so I can be more informed?

TIA
If you don't care why would you comment?

Looks like you've mapped them all out, it all comes down to preference

Are you doing just day hikes or overnight hikes?

Price is now the cheapest it's been since I've started watching it in March.

Day hikes.

But if you have to keep a chest of ice/water in the car for refilling, wouldn't it be more convenient to hike with the backpack than a bottle?

I'm lost. Why do you need a chest of ice water in the car for a day hike?

Sorry, I meant a day hike versus an overnight. In reality, I'm referring to taking a few hikes/being out all day. Wouldn't you want cold water in the car on the RTH, for example?

RTH doesn't have any major hikes.  And the HF will keep things ice cold, why do you need something in the car?

Buying the straw cap?
Looks like eBay may be the best source for that.

I read about some semi-intense hikes to get to some of the waterfalls. The water in the car is for refilling.

And we have a winner. With some ingenious research by my friend, it turns out that if you buy just the water reservoir/bladder for just $10, wrap it tightly in bubble wrap and place it in your already-owned backpack, you'll have the same results in regards to insulation and convenience as a $40 Camelbak.

Buying the 40oz Hydro Flask now. Big decision to make: which color ;D?

Also, anyone try hanging it (full, obviously) by the cap loop? Is that strong enough, or do I need one of those collars? I would use a carabiner to hang it from my camera bag or something.

After seeing my picture yesterday, I haven't convinced you to build your own CamelBak??  ;D
