I think that's a personal preference. Personally I prefer a minyan on shabbos over a nic(er) hotel, but to each his own.

There's a minyan 5 mins away from PH MEL...

East Melbourne Synagogue; Rabbi Dovid Gutnick. Supposed to be a great guy.

Great guy, good food, in a shul with a lot of history.
Still not the same as experiencing the local community, but you do get to experience the PH

Hmmm, I didn't know that. Do they provide meals, or would you need to get takeout? It's a lot tougher then, but we also like experiencing shabbos in different Jewish communities around the world. I don't know how much of an experience it'll be to eat in your hotel room. OTOH you may not be comfortable with strangers...

He can also just go to the PH one night on Motzei Shabbos.

I believe they offer meals; if it meant we had to eat in our rooms, we'd forego the PH.

And we love meeting strangers on our travels!

Well if the Gutnicks have guests you'll meet them. The shul's site says they do, but maybe not for both meals? Also is the PH shabbos friendly?

Seems the PH doesn't have suites near the ground floor, don't know much else. Dan?

Seems from your TR that shabbos there was doable and nice.  True, not the same as a community, and eating in a shul for lunch, while filling, is was different than being at someone's home. The plus side is you get to walk around the downtown area, which is really pretty.

I found that it was hard to find places to stay on the gor online for decent prices. Wasnt to many options except clustered in one specific place.
However once we got there,  there was plenty of places.

I'm not comfortable doing that unless I have a good backup. Then again unless I have a pretty good idea of what to do on the GOR itself before going I wouldn't have gone in the first place. I'm not that great with finding and/or doing unexpected activities.
