Just go and see where you get. Pull over, book from side of road and show up. Done.

Terrible idea this time of year, but could work other times.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Yup. Forgot about that. We did it in November and it was easy as pie.

You'd likely want to lock something down ahead of time, which in this case means I don't know the answer to OPs question.

Yeah I'm going to be there in March and would be more comfortable to have something booked in advance. Where did you stay?

Oiy, in that case, I can answer.  March is the same as November. Feel free to make up plans as you go.

When i looked into it,  there weren't that many choices and only in one or 2 clusters.  We ended up booking bimbi park (camping under the koalas)
That worked for us because we needed 2 separate rooms
But as we were driving, there were many more places then we saw online from America .
If u don't need a specific  size room,  i would book that day,  because you don't know how far thru the GOR you will be and where u want to spend the night

Try juicy car rentals they have taragos which are the Australia version of sienna but I'm pretty sure they have other cars too.al AFAIK they are very cheap.

Thanks.
Ended up with a reservation with europecar.

Any way to avoid the "premium location surcharge"?
They want an extra %24!

And the " vehicle or road licensing fee" of 7.15 per day up to a maximum of 221 per day? What does that even mean?

this guy is very cheap for car rentals. no underage fee. take a taxi from the airport....not too far. give him a call before you get there...hes a little crazy...but he's cheap....slightly older cars...but you'll get a camry for $24 aud per day (140000 kms/ ~8 yrs old...he'll quote you higher. just say your friend got it for that price. you can bargain him a little.not too much.

Thanks. I'll keep it in mind, but I've already reserved the other one, and I want a SUV regardless.

What are the options for Shabbat meals in Melbourne? Kimberley Gardens is the only one I've heard of and it's pretty pricey. Did everyone else just bring their own food?

We stayed at PH and ate here.

Rabbi and his wife are great.

Thank you. And bringing tuna fish into Australia isn't a problem as far as I've heard right? Also what have you guys done for cellphone/internet- do you just get a sim card at the airport? Haven't ever done that before so I have nothing to expect

Tuna sealed in a pouch or can should be ok, but not guaranteed. You'd need to declare it anyway. Use T-Mobile for cell service/internet.

How's this for an itinerary?

  • Arrive in MEL late Thursday night; check into PH MEL for 4 nights.
  • Friday: Stock up on kosher food for the next 2 weeks; explore the area around the food-upstockage-location(s); prepare for Shabbos
  • Shabbos: Well... Shabbos is Shabbos. :)
  • Sunday: Explore MEL and its various tourist traps
  • Monday: Pick up rental car; check out of PH MEL; head out to GOR, stay somewhere along the GOR overnight
  • Tuesday: Finish driving GOR to Grampians; stay in Grampians overnight
  • Wednesday: Putz around the Grampians for a while, then drive back to MEL - either via GOR, or one of the loops. Stay somewhere along the way overnight
  • Thursday: Finish the drive back to MEL. Stay in MEL (either PH MEL again, or some other hotel) overnight, then fly to SYD in the morning; alternatively, fly to SYD Thursday night, and stay somewhere in SYD overnight instead
  • Friday: Check into PH SYD for Shabbos (rest of itinerary to be continued in the SYD thread, once I'm done here)
Am I devoting too much time to GOR/Grampians? Should I be considering something else for those few days in between my weekend in MEL and my weekend in SYD (e.g. maybe fly to CNS for a few days to snorkel the GBR instead)?

TIA for any insight.

I'd send no more than 3 days on the GOR. How long will you have in SYD? There's more to see there than in MEL, so flying Thursday night may be worth it so you can have all day Friday in SYD.

You don't need the last night on the GOR. After Grampians, just head straight back to MEL.
