Wireless internet
« on: August 14, 2011, 02:08:25 AM »
I'm considering getting wireless internet, but don't really know too much about details. If we have 2 computers, would I need to get a mobile hotspot device?

Also, it seems like pans are priced according to how much data you need. How can I figure that out? We don't do heavy downloading, but I'll occasionally download a youtube video, and we stream tv shows.

Any advice? Which companies are better/cheaper?

Thanks!

if you currently are getting internet service by you all you need to buy is a wifi router which could be really cheap

If u r in the Brooklyn area Xchange Telecom has a $14.99 monthly plan for dsl
Which is ok for streaming dosnt matter the amount data u use.
I believe only for cell phones they r priced plans according to ur usage
As for ur question about wifi

Are you asking for MOBILE internet or WIRELESS internet in the home?

The two are completely different, though their applications may sometimes overlap.

Mobile internet is normally provided by cellphone companies, and it enables you to use your internet everywhere there is a cell phone signal.

Wireless internet in the home is normally just taking your already existing wired internet connection and broadcasting it wirelessly, enabling you for example to use your laptop anywhere in the home and not just when its connected to the wire...

Optimum is the best!! (if you ever have a problem they'll be there as a Hatzole Call)

but if you anyway want to use a wireless modem, why not try Optimum Free WiFi, check here http://www.optimum.net/WiFi/Find if you're near a hot spot and just ask a friend that has Optimum service to add you a free wifi user name and password, its definitely better then Non High Speed DSL. try it

i dont know all the differences but a few of them are: the range of the wifi rays, the amount of "plugs" you can put into the router box. and yes i assume they might be slower although i would have imagined that the speed is based on the internet supplier you have

Most routers these days even the cheap ones are faster then most peoples internet connection.

I guess I'm looking for mobile...maybe...?

I want internet access, but I don't think I need a regular phone line. What are my options?

I still don't understand what you want here.

Why don't you just sign up for the best cable/fios/dsl deal you can find and plug in a $20 wireless router into the modem?

 :-[

I guess I gave the thread a poor title - I'm not looking for wireless internet per se, and if I had regular internet access, I wouldn't have a problem with getting wifi.

BUT - As far as I know, to get DSL, you need to have a phone line. Since I don't need a phone line for phone service, it seems like a waste of money to get it just for the purpose of getting internet if there's another viable option out there. Now, here's where I get fuzzy - aside from mobile broadband, are there other options for getting internet access if you don't have a phone line?

Can you get cable internet without a phone line?

Or, to put it another way - if I don't need a phone line, what's the best internet deal in the NY/NJ area?

In CLE you can get DSL, Cable, or U-verse/FIOS all without having a phone line.
Can't imagine NYC would be any worse off than us.

Here DSL is about $20, and Cable and U-verse/FIOS start at $30 and up.

Yes. Look into CableVision, Optimum Online. You do not need a phone line, and the speed is (for the most part) super quick (depending on what you pay for).

Yup FIOS is completely independent from a phone line. If you want you can get a VOIP phone line through the fiber line that they will run, although once you get fiber it is incredibly hard to get Verizon to run you a copper line in the future.

I have optimum now phone and Internet, I mainly need the Internet and phone is just for emergency or if cell phone broken, but I'm paying a lot, so is there a cheaper alternative? Like keeping just the optimum online and getting phone service vain another cheaper source?
