RESTAURANTS (the best of)

There are hundreds of kosher restaurants in Paris.  The locals generally don't eat the meat under Beis Din as they don't require Glatt meat.  But they will eat everything else under Beis din.

Activities:
-Segway Tour. Please do not PM Ergel with requests for coupon codes. The codes are long dead
-Seine River Tour
-Eiffel Tour (Metro: Trocadero -6,9)
-Versailles Palace and Gardens. Never wait on line to buy tickets. 1. Use museum pass 2. Buy in advance 3. There are vending machines near the bathrooms (you have to poke around to find them) without lines. (if you go during a really busy time and the line seems endlessly long, go to the gardens first and return to the palace in the afternoon when lines are shorter). To get an audio guide, you usually proceed across the Royal Courtyard after passing security. If the lines for the audio guides are long, turn left in the Courtyard, to the Apartments of the daughter's of Louis XV’s. There you'll find another counter where you can get audio guides, with no lines at all. You can then exit the apartments and continue along the tour, bypassing the longer line.
-Louvre Art Museum (Closed Tuesday) (Metro: Palais Royal - Musée du Louvre -1,7) Shushan/Purim artifacts that can be seen at the Louvre, per the book Purim and the Persian Empire.
-D'Orsay Art Museum (Closed Monday) (Metro: Solférino -12)
-Musée de l'Orangerie des Tuileries (closed Tuesday) small museum featuring Monet's lilies (Metro Concorde: -1,8,12)
-Centre Georges Pompidou modern art museum open 11-9. closed tuedays (Metro: Rambuteau -11)
-Tuileries Gardens. (Metro: Tuileries -1)
-Paris sewer museum Smells really bad but an interesting look at the sewer system
-Champs Elysees shopping (Metro: Champs-Élysées - Clemenceau -1,13)
-Arc de Triomphe (Metro: Charles de Gaulle - Étoile -1,2,6)
-Operan National De Paris opera house. tours daily 11:30 and 2:30. Admission included in Museum Pass, tour extra
-Montmartre (Great neighborhood to walk around with boutiques, artists, and great views, and a funicular that kids will love) (Metro: abbesses -12, Anvers -2)
-The Great Synagogue (La Victoria) is beautiful but the main shul is only open on Shabbos mornings for Shacharis, but definitely worthwhile if you're there over Shabbos (Metro: Notre-Dame-de-Lorette -12)

Hotels:
-Park Hyatt Paris (Hyatt cat 7) is an outstanding value for your points. They used to give a phenomenal kosher breakfast but now it's barely even worth requesting.  Still rooms are a decent size for Paris, the Spa facilities are very nice, and the intoxicating smell used throughout the hotel for forever be linked with the romance of Paris. Ideally located between the Opera and Tuileries metro stations.
The Park Hyatt has free parking, though driving and parking elsewhere in Paris is very difficult.
The Park Hyatt has also complimentary bikes for guests.
There is a backdoor for entry on shabbos.

-The InterContinental Paris - Le Grand is not far from the Park Hyatt. It cost 70k IHG points per night or you can use IHG free nights. It is a good alternitive if the PH is not available or if you don't have/don't want to spend 30k Hyatt points per night.

-The Westin (SPG cat 6) is not as luxurious at the Park Hyatt but is located nearby and does the trick if you only have Starpoints and not Chase or Hyatt points.

Shabbos meals:
-Chabad of Champs Elysees has great shabbos meals and you're sure to bump into other tourists there as well to share tips.
It is a 30 minute walk to the Park Hyatt, but the walk is quite lovely via the Tuileries Gardens and the Champs Elysees.
Reservations are required: http://www.chabadchampselysees.com/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/888847/jewish/Shabbat-at-Chabad-Champs-Elyses.htm
-if you don't/can't eat at Chabad, they suggest getting takeout from Ben & Cook located in the 8th. Hashgacha: rabbinate Lubavitch De France 33 1 45 61 03 95. 35 Euro for 2 challas, 2 dips, meatballs with noodles or veggies for 2. they close at 3pm on Fridays (in the summer). call for more info
- Friday night meals at Grand Synagogue http://www.tiny.cc/chabbat

There is no eruv in Paris. Consider taking the metro to shul with your talis bag along with return tickets for motzei shabbos.

Transport from CDG:
-If you are going to the Opera area you can take the RoissyBus (pronounced Wahsee-Boos as you will get blank stares if you ask for the Royzee-Bus) which goes there nonstop. You can pay by credit card in the RoissyBus waiting station or on the bus.  The cost is €10.  It is a 5 minute walk to the Park Hyatt.

-There are also train options from CDG: the subway is located in terminal 2E/2F, to get to paris its ligne B (Blue) it should take approximately 30minutes to get to Gare Du Nord
it cost 9€10 each way per person

- Mendy Taxi: 0(1133) 6 50 99 82 93 http://mendystransport.com/en/
- Shimon taxi: 0(1133)6 98 27 16 08  Tamidshuttle@gmail.com

- Uber, Bolt are the best option to get to paris cheapest and fastest

Metro:
The subway is fast, efficient, and cheap. A book of 10 tickets is 13,30€ for adults and 6,65€ for kids.
The subway closes between 12:30 and 2am.

Map:
Streetwise Paris cannot emphasize enough, this is really a must. Of course, if you have GMaps and data you don't need this map unless you really like paper.

Other Tips
-If you plan on visiting several of the items covered by the Museum Pass - make sure to check it out and price out your options.  Many times it is worth it to get a one-day or multi-day Museum Pass to save some money and more importantly, time (see link for more details: http://en.parismuseumpass.com/)
-Double check days when museums/sites are closed as many do close on different days of the week.

Thing is that if you shoot in low light with a P&S without flash, your results won't come close to an SLR, especially one with a decent lens. So unless you're using a high-end P&S, and know what you're doing, your images won't come close.

Lens?

ETA: Just notice that you're a (semi?) pro photographer. You have some nice work. I particularly like your shots by the pond ;)

True but if you play around with the settings most people would get shots they are much happier with on their point and shoot.

It all has to do with the sensor size. A p&s sensor is significantly smaller than a DSLR and this affects the pictures big time. acquiring the 'SLR' look with a p&s is quite difficult.

these were shot with the canon 24-70mm L lens - quite bulky for traveling.
Yes. Thank you :)

happier that they have less to carry around :)

+1, messing with the settings or not, you're not going to get photos like the ones here with a standard P&S.

Even if not, it'd be a big missed opportunity to not bring it to MLE (as you can tell).

Trip report: Special thanks to Dan, AJK, and Ergel for all your help in planning this trip.

Wednesday evening flight – United to CDG coach. We landed and took the Roissy “Wa-see” bus from Charles de Gaulle to the Opera metro station.

Stayed at Park Hyatt for four nights in an upgraded room with Chase points and two free nights from opening the Hyatt CC card (there were no suites available on award booking.) Daily breakfast for diamond members as mentioned was orange juice, coffee, and pastries from Korcarz. (On Monday morning, we asked for eggs and salad, and they gave it to us from Korcarz as well.)

Thursday: We took a tour of the Pompidou which is this wacky building with the pipes on the outside which was pretty interesting. We then went to the Jewish museum but it was closed. Went to Pitzman's for food which was OK.
Back to the hotel for some sleep and we ate dinner in our room. Then I went to daven at Beth El mincha and maariv.

Friday morning we went to the Eiffel Tower. Then we went shopping for some Shabbos food and ate lunch at Korcarz. After that, we went to the Holocaust Museum. We then walked up and down the Galleries shopping area for souvenirs.

Friday night: As it was Gimmel Tammuz, the main rav was in NY so his brother in law took over for him. (His English was ok and with my wife’s broken French we communicated well.)
We prearranged meals at Chabbad of Champs Elyseees. We took a taxi from the hotel to the shul. Mincha was at 8:30. We then waited to light candles at Plag. After maariv, there was a Kiddush downstairs and a delicious meal upstairs for about fifty people. We left and on the way back to the hotel, we got to see the eleven p.m. light show of the Eiffel Tower. It was really nice!
Shabbos morning, we were at Chabbad again. In the afternoon, we walked through the Tulliries Gardens  and got to see the Louvre from outside.
For mincha at 9:00 p.m., we walked to the Great Synagogue but the guards told us that they were not Davening there and directed us to a shul nearby. Motzaei Shabbos the earliest was at 11:05! It was a real long day.

Sunday morning we had a 9:15 Segway Tour. It was great and a lot of fun even in the rain! We then had lunch in Ill Pillazio.
We took the train to the Versailles Palace. It was very interesting. We did not walk around the gardens because of the rain.

Back to the hotel to freshen up. We then went to eat in Inte Caffe. The food was very tasty.
Monday morning we quickly ran to the Musee de l'Orangee. We checked out and took the Roissy bus to CDG for our flight to Zurich.
Zurich trip report:
Inter Europe flights in Business Class are nothing special. The middle seat is kept empty. The kosher food from Schalom’s was ok. It was a short flight of only an hour.

Landed in ZRH. Went to buy train tickets for the city and for our trip the next day to Lucerne. We arrived at the Park Hyatt in Zurich, and used our second two free nights in a gorgeous suite.
We ate supper in Fine by Fine.

Tuesday: Kosher breakfast from the hotel was free for diamond members. It was airline food plus a kosher bottle of champagne and delicious Swiss chocolates.

We took lunch with us from Books and Bagels. Then we went with the trains to Lucerne and up Mount Pilatus with the cogwheel. The view was amazing as it was a pretty clear day. Down we went with the cable cars. I would recommend it that way because you can get a car for yourself. The ride down is a lot of fun!

Wednesday morning: Kosher breakfast again from hotel.
We took a taxi to the airport for our flight back with a stop in Frankfurt.
First class lounge in ZRH is ok. When the plane landed in FRA, there was a man holding a sign directing all First Class passengers to a waiting Mercedes van, and drove us straight to the First Class lounge. The other passengers had to cram onto waiting buses to be driven the 15 minute ride to the terminals.

We did not get to go to the First Class terminal as the connection was less than two hours. The kosher food that I ordered for the lounge through Lufthansa did not make it there. In the lounge, we received new First Class boarding passes with a time of when our driver would drive us straight to the plane.
We were driven this time in a small fancy car to the plane- a Boeing 747.

LH First is amazing. You have a recliner and a full separate bed, bose headphones, pajamas, etc.  There were only two other people in First. Kosher food was ok. All in all, we had a really great vacation for almost no money out of pocket.

Awesome; generally LH F doesn't consistently open up until about 2 weeks before travel date.

My Amex platinum concierge just emailed me that she can't make me reservations at Darjeeling because there dining room is closed for the summer.
Does anyone know anything about this? Can I order to go and eat in my hotel, is there kitchen open?
Did she make this up? (I wish)

Many kosher places in Europe close down after 9 of Av (August usually) when they go on their vacation. We ran into this problem in Italy once.

Paris TR 7/31-8/2

I had 2 Hyatt suite nights expiring at the end of August, and after hearing all about the Park Hyatt Paris from everyone’s trip-reports, I decided to book my nights there with my wife and kids.

One of the (not so many?) perks of living in London is the Eurostar train which takes you from the center of London to the center of Paris in 2 hours and 20 minutes. I snagged two tickets for £79 each (~$120). Kids under 4 ride free in lap, and one can usually find an empty seat to put them in.

After doing some research, I decided to rent a car as opposed to taking public transportation. I rented a small automatic car from National at Gare-du-Nord. Driving in Paris is not for the faint-hearted, and if you’re not travelling with small children, I wouldn’t recommend it. Personally, I enjoy trying out driving in different countries, so I didn’t mind it. Parking is VERY difficult to find in most of Paris, so thank goodness for the free Valet parking at the PHP.

There isn’t much I could add about the PHP that hasn’t been mentioned before. The service is amazing and very personal, the concierge were knowledgeable and very helpful, and the location is great. We were upgraded to an Executive Suite, which is basically two interconnecting rooms, with one being the bedroom, and one a living room. They provided two cots for our kids, which were placed in the living room. We also had an impromptu meet-up (DO?) with DrDanny in the lobby.

Day 1

We checked in to the hotel at around noon. We then drove to Pitzman for lunch. They have delicious falafel and very good pizza. I took the one with tuna, mushrooms and a sunny-side-up egg. The plain pizza was better.
We continued to Versailles, which was a quick and easy drive with no traffic. Magnificent palace, and beautiful gardens.

When we returned, we drove to the Eiffel Tower. I found free parking (after 7pm) on a side street, right next to the tower. We had originally wanted to ride up to the top, but due to a technical issue that’s been going on, there was only one working elevator, and online tickets were sold out for a few months. When we got there, there was crazy long line to buy tickets, so we scratched that plan. Instead we hung around in the park there and took pictures.

We were very tired the first night, so we stopped at Il Palazzo on the way back to the hotel (5 min drive), and bought food to take out. Food was good and fresh. We had 2 kinds of pasta, and baked salmon.

Day 2

We went to Disneyland, which was also a quick and easy drive. Not much to say about it, it’s Disneyland, and the kids loved it. We took along sandwiches and some pastries from Korcarz for lunch.
When we returned, we stopped at Le Shine for supper. Luckily, I found parking right outside. The food was great. We had sushi, eggrolls, some sweet chicken, and spicy chicken, and fried rice. They have delicious sorbets too. They don’t have an English menu, but thankfully there was an asian (Freddie Wong lookalike) waiter that told us what everything was.

After that, we stopped at the Trocadéro for a nighttime view of the tower. We missed the light show by a minute, but got some nice shots.

Day 3

We took the open-top bus tour around Paris. We stopped at the Louvre, but couldn’t spend too much time there, because the kids weren’t too interested in art. We then just rode around Paris, taking in all the sights.

After that, we returned to the hotel to pick up our car and luggage. We stopped again by the Pletzel to pick up some stuff, and then made our way to the 19th arrondissement for the Tibs/La Marina combo everyone talks about. On our way though, we hit some crazy construction traffic with no way out. We ended up getting there very late and we decided to do takeout, and eat in the car on the way to the station.
Although Tibs are open all day, their kitchen is closed in the afternoon hours, so we took food from La Marina which wasn’t bad. They also prepared us a “Farandole” to go, which was a first for them (or so they said). We also picked up some chocolate from Damyel (which I haven’t yet gotten around to tasting). Ardely’s were closed.

We made it back to the station with minutes to spare, and b”h there were some empty seats on the train, so the kids (and us) got to rest a little...
