I may be missing something, pretty sure most airlines allow strollers and carseats free of charge.

+1 even lap children get both a stroller and car seat free of charge.
I would love to believe the same, but:

A (not so) quick call to united confirmed that were all halfways right, according to that rep on a domestic flight you get to take along a car seat 'OR' a stroller free of charge.

Book the 757-200 next time you'll get lie flat seats.

I need timing and availability. The regular domestic first is fine for a daytime flight; the leather seat is very comfy and actually lets you be productive.

On the way back, it was a 738, and I was happy I didn't waste the points on first, as the seats were old and worn and the plane itself was just rather nasty.
Coach is 12.5k while business is 17k LH or 20k SQ

Not much of a waste for a slightly better seat, 2 free bags, priority check in etc.

True, but in my case I was already getting priority check-in and two free bags.

Thats not how I read it.

United accepts one stroller and one car seat free of charge for each child, including children under the age of two traveling on an adult's lap (i.e. domestic)and infants traveling internationally on 10 percent of an adult fare.

I recently did the same; had to book in I because there was no saver economy available. EWR-LAX was a brand new 739, so the seats very nice and comfortable. What stood out the most was the service, with the FA taking my jacket when I got on and making sure my glass was always full. I was sort of upset the flight was so fast (5 hours and 1 minute).

On the way back, it was a 738, and I was happy I didn't waste the points on first, as the seats were old and worn and the plane itself was just rather nasty.
737-900 does not have lie flat for J, correct?

CMIIW, but United 737-900, at least as configured for SFO-BOS, has two classes, F and Y.
(I do understand that F on UA is probably equivalent to J on many others!).

Still begs the question, are the seats in F on the 737-900 lie flat?
